Very early mornings and long days right now. Need to kick in my NCKA Memory Storage System before it all blurs into the summer...

Yesterday I was stoked to guide Brian and Chris from Elk Grove (they found me through Kevin Hofer - THANK YOU, BRO!!)  They've got their families at a prime vacation house at the Cove, and they decided that an offshore kayak fishing adventure was the ticket for a good time and a break from the wives and two year olds! Hey - we all love our wives and kids, but sometimes you've just gotta go fishing!

We met up at my customary time of 530AM, got geared up and acquainted with the kayaks, and we were on the water and fishing by shortly after 6. It wasn't long and Brian had a fish on near the Bell Buoy - how awesome that it turned out to be a salmon! 23 incher in the bag. Soon afterward Chris had a hot pumper on, but it threw the hooks. Hopes were high, and I got word on the radio from good buddy Eric Kaai about a Whistle bite from the previous day. We headed that way then arced around the NW side to in front of the hotels and finally back to the lighthouse corner where we were heading back to the Bell for lack of much happening elsewhere. By this time Chris was feeling the quease a bit, so we elected to take a late morning break, regroup and hopefully get back on the water by noon or so.

The break worked out well and we were soon re-launched with a new sense of readiness for getting some fish in the bag - we only had the one small salmon and a smallish black rockfish at the time. We got right outside Pilot Rock and the bait was still hanging in there, so we started fishing and ended up going on an amazing run of lingcod hooked - between the 3 of us we caught about 15 lings in an hour or so - 7 keepers in the bag!

We went on to scout around the Bell again, but soon we'd all had enough and were heading for the trucks. Of course we'd troll in though, and, oh happy day, Chris got a salmon of his own! It was a great way to cap the session off, and I was so glad we got out there for round two at noon.

Filleted fish for the guys and enjoyed a cold brew at the cleaning table before hitting the road - 11 hours with my guests, and I had a blast! Thanks, guys, for supporting my business, and congrats on a great day of kayak fishing at Shelter Cove for your first time fishing on the ocean from the yaks.

Get on it when you can.  :smt001

Heck Yeah, gotta love that velvet ocean!

the mist on the mountains there always reminds me of a Bob Ross painting.
