Has anybody got caught without a license, and what was the punishment? I was fishing today and didn't realize I had left it at home until I saw it on the table. Like can they just look up my profile?

That's happened to me too a couple times..
Left the license on my vest which I normally don't wear while kayaking..
I inquired next time I saw a warden and was told yes they can look up your Go ID number, but it's subject to the officers discretion..

Still, probably a good idea to take photo of license as a back up though

Law reads it must be in posession. If the officer wants to make issue of it they can. Probably not much credence in court, and a small fine if anything.
I only fish on days that end with Y

This morning I realized I left my license at home just as I was about to launch.  :smt012 Packed everything up and drove to the nearest Big 5 to pick up a duplicate license. Then went back to the launch and unpacked everything again. Only to get blown off the water a couple hours later. :smt013

Interesting note, I had to pay for all my duplicate stamps in addition to my duplicate license.

it's "possession" so i would assume it has to be with you at all times? there was one time I left  it in the glove compartment while I was fishing and upon landing DFG was checking and i told him i forgot it in my car. he was nice enough to let me go get it but he can easily given me a ticket.

Very expensive, unfortunately all dfw fines all start around the 1000$ mark.about 10yrs ago a friend of mine got cited in Mendocino county and it was 600$ so depending which county your in its gonna vary.good luck to you
My biggest worry is that my wife(when I'm dead)will sell my fishing gear for what I said I paid for it

It's $192.

https://www.marincourt.org/data/UBPS/MiscCode.pdf

page 141 or 15/50 on that pdf.

The base fine is only $25 but with all the court costs and everything its more.  Fees can vary by county but that's pretty close for everywhere we fish.

Keep it in your wallet

I have 3 different waterproof cases.  My wallet doesn't seem like the best place.  I have a case for hunting, a case for CA fishing and a case for OR fishing.  I usually carry all three in my dry bag since that always goes with me whenever I leave the house to go muck around.  If I put all that shit in my wallet it would hurt to sit on.

I leave mine in my truck and I wear it like before. I know the law says you don't have to anymore, but the new law is riddled with excuses, laziness, and invites racial profiling. I liked the old wear it reg.
Yeah, hanging it on my mirror, it fades. I get a replacement half way thru the summer, and never had a prob. Yeah it costs more and a pain in the ass, but I am making a concerted effort to comply with the law.
How many ass hats on YouTube getting their ass stomped by a LEO can say that?

I just keep mine in a Plano box that gets stored in the same place as my fishing lures. If I forget my lures I can't fish anyway lol.
Thresher in avatar and Soupfin Shark in signature both caught and pic taken by me.

I don't bring my wallet on the kayak. And, besides, my license is like 6' long, so I'd need a purse, not a wallet.

Personally, I think it's ridiculous that anyone is required to carry a license. As I understand it, lots of other states use this thing called "technology", which enables the game warden to look up the info when needed.
I don't like stuff that sucks.

Unfortunately there are lots of spots along our coast where cellular coverage is spotty. So until there is 100% coverage, this will probably not happen.
