The questions are asked for a very good reason. About 53 percent of women who get murdered by guns are killed by their husbands and/or family members using guns that were kept at the house...

Unless you're OK with that status quo, you should have no issues answering a few well intentioned questions from your doctor.

If you're OK with the number of people who get murdered every day and feel we shouldn't even try to address it, I'm not sure what to say... That's just sad.

while the questions are appropriate it`s the setting that I question....my bet it`s an insurance company gathering info under government guise to find a way to uninsure any "accidents''  by firearms ...

Doctors jobs are to doctor! None of their business weather or not I own weapons or not, especially if my visit is lets say, for poison oak!  Blisters on skin have nothing to do with gun ownership! Now, If  I was in for a visit to have, say a bullet removed from my ass? Well then questions regarding gun ownership could apply then. beyond that, NOYFB!

Actually, what you just said is sad.  Sad that you cherry pick a stat to further your anti-gun cause.

Between 2001 and 2012, the number of American women who were murdered by current or ex male partners during that time was 11,766.  That's ~1000 per year.  So tell me, what affect do these questions have on these stats, and why does my privacy need to be invaded?

Are you guys familiar with the term "preventative medicine"? Or the idea of being proactive instead of reactive?

ER doctors spend A LOT of time treating gunshot wounds. If the doctors can prevent a few by asking women and children questions in a situation where they feel safe and comfortable speaking up, I say ROCK ON!

Where do you draw the line?  Why don't we have little old ladies from the nursing home going door to door asking the same questions?

I think the line is fine where it is.  They're in a hospital setting where people are generally feeling safe, trusting of doctors and nurses, and there is a woman or child with some sort of physical injury with cause unknown.

So I take my son to the Dr. for a case of poison oak and he asks about gun ownership.  My son informs him there are several rifles, several shotguns, several air rifles, a couple of handguns and a blackpowder rifle in the house.

Please explain how .... "ER doctors spend A LOT of time treating gunshot wounds. If the doctors can prevent a few by asking women and children questions in a situation where they feel safe and comfortable speaking up, I say ROCK ON!"...has anything to do  regarding prevention of gun violence???

If a kid or spouse (no it doesn't have to be the woman) ends up in the ER due to physical assault, then the PO should already or will soon be involved.  The Dr. doesn't need to know squat.

People trust doctors, and they understand that what they tell their doctor is (generally) confidential. I think it's a very appropriate place for that kind of conversation, and I have no doubt that it's saving lives.

I noticed they did not ask if  their are any explosives, bombs or drugs like  heroin or meth or any drug making laboratories in your house. Seems to me these would be more appropriate about feeling safe.

BTW, just because I am not OK with docs asking these questions, does NOT mean I am "OK with the number of people murdered every day".  It doesn't mean "we shouldn't even try to address it".  It doesn't mean I am "just sad".

But it does say something about the confrontational style of debate being employed here.

AlexB, why are you against FREEDOM?   See what I mean.  The way I asked that question implies you are against freedom.  Are you?

With probably cause, sure.  But outright asking everyone?

From my own personal experience, of which I would prefer not to elaborate on, what is said in "confidence" with a Dr. does NOT always stay with the Dr.  The time frame in my case was less than 10 minutes. :smt011
