Anyone have one of these...http://www.rivermarinesupply.com/xcart/catalog/product_11267_Baitpro_Sabiki_Combo_with_Spinning_Reel.html

I love the idea and want one but the price is killing me.  Anyone have a home brew alternative?

Dear Sean:

I make up some basic hand lines from  wooden "Galley Rails"  I found in the Dumpster. I gave them away to Kids at the Paddle Fest. I could send you one for free if, you send me a Fish Sticker.

Ernie, try this...

- 1/2" PVC ($1.23 for a 10ft piece)
- 2 small hose clamps ($2)
- cheap'ol fishing reel

1) cut the PVC to the desire rod length
2) use the small hose clamps to secure the reel to the rod
2) drill a hole about a foot above the reel

Presto... you're done.  If you wanna get fancy, you can add a foam grip.

You can find thinwall plastic tubing at tap plastic and use hose clamps to attach that ol beater reel to one end. drill a hole near the front of the reel run the line thru and presto, cheap ugly but should do the trick. Maybe bend an old metal shoe horn or ladle and tape to the front so that the hooks don't get caught on the lip of the tubing.

Hi Chuck:

I like your idea. My old Wooden Hands lines are more for fishing off a Dock or Boat but, the price is right. I made the mistake of bending over the edge of Allen's SPTW to watch the ball of Bait, and rolled the Yak.  :smt005
I'll try to make one up and, thanks for the heads-up.

Cool... I plan to make a sabiki rod this week.  I already bought the PVC.

The store bought sabiki rods have a flared tip to prevent the hooks from snagging as you reel it into the rod and it also in designed to cup a small round sinker.

I think there are a few ways you can improvise.  You can do as Elric suggested or you can even attach a small funnel.  However, if you buy a full length of 1/2 " PVC, you'll notice that one end is already flared.  Just use that end as the tip of the rod.  If you want, you should be able to take a heat gun or torch to soften and flare the end even more.  Good luck.  I'll let you know how mine turns out.

Okay... since there's been a bunch of posts lately regarding bait making... I decided to make my sabiki rod today.  It was incredibly easy and I'm sure it'll work great.  Here's the link....

Don't forget -- You can only legally fish with 3 hooks per line in the bay, so you may need to remove a few hooks from your sabiki.

I just use one of my spinning rods.  No need to buy something new, nor get fancy.

Sabiki rods make it easier to stow and transport multihook sabiki rigs, thats all.

I use a wooden dowel or cork to store my rig.  Even smaller, and I don't have to have a useless rod with me.

Hey Mol.  Believe me... I feel the same way about lugging around unnecessary rods.  I prefer the minimalist approach.  The only time I'd bring my sabiki rod is if I know I'm short on live bait.  Having a sabiki ready to drop (without fumbling with rigs and hooks) when you come across that elusive bait ball could make the difference between having live bait or not.

When I'm fishing in a situation where only one rod is allowed (like fishing for salmon, rockfish, or in the bay), I won't even bother bringing a spare like some of my well armed fishing buddies who bring 2 or 3 extra rods  :smt002.

True.  When I was in SD I would just try to make bait in the morning with my rig on my main casting rod.  I could keep 12 macks kicking and healthy all day in my bait tank.
