InsaneDuane, Frankfishing, and I went out to the OAK airport on the last day to catch and keep a sturgeon over the new 66" limit.  The sturgeon card program starts today March 1st.

However, the only thing big we caught in the bay were wind waves and nasty weather.  The first pic is of Duane sitting out a hail storm.  In the second pic you can barely see Duane bouncing around in the waves.  It looked a lot like open ocean conditions.

I did catch a hefty batray early on.   It got me excited thinking it was the real deal... but no such luck again. :smt011

If I ever finally catch my first legal kayak dino.... I just might retire from sturgeon fishing just like Mooch. :smt003

Looks like fun..............NOTTTTT!!!! Even if I go in a regular boat, I wait for the nice after storm days, when the water's like a mirror....(note the word "AFTER", not during boyz) tough enough to see the bite when it's calm sometimes let a lone in storm chop.  Gotta love the die hard attitude tho...  :smt002 Too bad the efforts wern't rewarded.

My wife said that she thought she saw two Kayaks at the end of the runway when she landed in Oakland late yesterday afternoon. Her thoughts were," That's got to be my crazy honey and his friends". I smiled and said yes babe that was them but I got off the water before the hail incident. Will have to name this adventure,
"The Hail Mary of Sturg. hunting".
Sorry I couldn't stay with you guys longer.....

I hope I'm not turning anyone off to fishing the bay in less than perfect conditions by posting such pics because I really don't think it's all that bad if you're prepared and dressed for the weather.

Duane and I were waterproof and windproof from head to toe.  I was wearing breathable waders, a hooded rain coat, and gloves.  Although it was raining and hailing, to me, it was no less comfortable than riding on a ski resort chairlift while it's snowing.

Although the wind waves were big, they were still somewhat predictable and manageable.  A few waves washed over the side, but I was prepared with all my gear secured from going overboard.  In sketchy conditions, as long as I'm not too far from shore, I'm okay with it.

At beginning of the day, the conditions looked good, so we decided to go with the original plan and paddled out 2.5 miles to the main channel.  But when, the wind and waves picked up, we played it safe by paddling back and fishing closer to shore.

Believe it or not.... in such sketchy conditions, I feel much more safer in my kayak than a typical fishing boat.

For me.... it's the other way around.

In the Bay, you're closer to help and you almost always have cell phone coverage and VHF radio contact.  Also, there are no big surf launches and landings to deal with.... or great white sharks either. :shark ..... usually. :smt002

In the Bay you have:

1) the current to deal with. :smt013..
2) the wind chop - nothing worse than trying to paddle back with 3 foot chop crashing on you - 3 seconds apart from each other :smt011...
3) the low tide mud fest  :smt009

IMO: I'm feel more comfortable in the Ocean  :smt002
