Just got back from setting the crab pots at Doran and the off shore wind is smoking!!! Get your fishing in early and be safe.

ps saw a squid boat tucked in at Doran. The Lawson's report about thte white sea bass makes perfect sense...

I would like to join you folks but I am heading Bodega Bay aboard the New Sea Angler.

Have fun and let us know if Cap'n Rick still is an innovator who invented the lingcod, rockfish, crab combo and is the best thing since sliced bread. Well, maybe even since before sliced bread.

Not sure if you are joking or are unaware of Mr. Powers history of fishing violations.  Here's a bit from an old news article by By JOHN M. GLIONNA, TIMES STAFF WRITER BODEGA BAY, Calif:
"Operation Near Shore kicked off more than a year ago after several amateur fisherman hired out Powers' boat. "They were just appalled by what they saw," said Fish and Game Deputy Chief Frederick Cole. "This guy broke just about every ethical rule of fishing on the open seas."

Officials soon expanded their search. Eventually, other complaints came from passengers who didn't like captains or their crews encouraging them to violate the law. "I don't understand why party boat skippers think they're going to take people out on the ocean and do things that just aren't right and not expect that the passengers aren't going to call us as soon as they get back to shore," Aldrich said."

The violations weren't just limited to doing the whole boat limits thing, from what I have heard his behavior was egregious.  He ultimately pled down to some misdemeanors, community service, a suspended 90 jail sentence (he had a broken pelvis), and a bunch of fines.  All of this while he was the head of a major local fishing organization.

Ok, thread back on track.....

Short version, no halibut, 1 bite, lots of boats, 1 boat caught 1 that we saw.

Long version. I arrived and met Scotty at 0530. The wind did not get the memo that it was supposed to be there and it was flat calm. We rigged up and were on the water in short order to join a large armada of other people fishing. I can't wait until my schedule changes and I have weekdays off to fish!

We started using sabikis to find bait and I picked up a few pretty quickly. Bait was pretty easy to come by, but I cannot stress this enough USE THE SMALLEST SABIKI YOU CAN FIND!! Scotty couldn't get bait with a larger sized sabiki. As soon as he switched to a smaller one I gave him he was loading up on bait. Bait was perch, jacksmelt, mackerel, and sardines. I'm sure there were anchovies around too, but they didn't take the sabiki.

Scotty dropped a crab pot and we started a drift by the yellow can headed to white gulch.

I had 1 take down that mauled the back half of my bait, but I tried to set the hook too soon. We did 1 drift down, relaxed at the turn of the tide, and did a drift back. I only got the one bite in the beginning of the day. The wind turned on around noon and we called it a day

Near white gulch I saw a powerboater land a good sized halibut, but that was the only one I saw coming in.

The crab pot yielded lots of rock crab and 1 small dungie.

I'm ready to go back and give it another shot soon!
