I think Erik's big vermillion came from Anchor Bay last year.  Although, he did have a nice copper at Elk that probably would have gotten him 3rd place as well.

Can't wait for Elk.  I'm guessing the spots for this year's event will go even faster than last year.

Randall - it's really only "BAD" if your in a hurry to make it up that hill before the weight-in time / deadline.....especially if you have a potential winning fish on your stringer. For the past two derby's - I never had to worry about getting back in a hurry :smt011 :smt003 But I still had a blast just hanging out and partying with the NCKA family  :headbang:

...just make sure you have the roleez big balloon wheels  - trust me on this, it will make life easier when humping up and down the "hill"  :smt002

Guys!  Its not the hill goin up that will get you!  It only seems bad if or when you dont have the proper sand tires on your kayak cart.  Imagine, fishin the derby all day, then landin on the beach, already a little fatigued.  The middle of the beach is owned by poseidon who throws some wicked little sets in there but then, alas, 100 yds of pullin your loaded down yak through deep sand, with the extra weight of fat rockies to the trail.

I saw a couple guys both years at the entrance/exit of the beach area lookin real poopered. Myself included.  My first year claimed my hobie wheels on the first yak trip down.  I then had to carry my yak down the trail to the beach not even thinkin about the trip up.  When we landed, we moved our yaks to the top of the beach and I then ran up the trail and borrowed wheels from scwafish.  I was red in the face and breathin hard at this point.  Ran back down, loaded one yak, pulled it up, with bro Elric helping, then ran back down and grabbed the second yak mine being heavier than elrics hobie.  We were hustlin.  That tore me up.

The second year, this last, I purchased some rolleez with the big inflated sand tires.  I loaded my tarpon160 up, probabley about 35 lbs of jigs, food, water and misc fishing items such as gaff, pliers, blah, blah, and started down the trail.  It was amazing!!!  The kayak was trying to race me down.  There is a little section at the bottom of the hill where you turn right to go to the beach and walk on a trail that pitches about 6 degrees to the left.  Its narrow with a couple roots and holes  on the down side.  Sailed thru with ease.  My buddy Nate(bungle) was hangin no prob behind me but had settled for the rolleez with the smaller wheels.  When I hit the deep sand I just cruised right on through a couple bros who were pullin their yaks carts like plows in a potatoe field.  Oh the memories, I looked back and then had to ditch my yak and went back and we lifted nates yak and walked it down to the wet sand.  Problem solved.

After the derby ended I paddled in and got pooped just running up the beach to where i had left my wheels.  I thought that my cab I had caught might place so I was running.  I strapped on the wheels and ran back down the beach, passed over the sand and hit the trail.  It was amazing how easy the trail up was when I hadn't expended my energy in the sand.  Truly, the rolleez sand tires are a major must have.  I would have no prob taking my yak up and down that hill twice in a weekend.  Hope this convinces anyone who may go this August to get the wheels and then not have to worry about it.  JTF..

What spots? Camping spots? Is the number of entrants limited?

Angel - I believe it's only the first 60 kayakers to register that will be allowed at the campsite. Sean, correct me if I'm wrong.

When do we register? By "the campisite" do you mean the official campsite?  Are others available?
