Lost Coast Quickee - 6/9/16

With the ocean hitting extreme flat yesterday and a report from a friend that there was actually a couple feet of viz along a favorite Lost Coast stretch, I hit the road for an ab dive at midday.

A mile and a half on sand with gear on the yak-on-wheels was a good warmup, and a shallow water dive with much better viz than usual made for a delightful couple of hours.

Saw some friends who had a nice dive of their own, then it was back up the beach and over the hill in time to pick up the kids from school.
 
Your beach trek and ten inch abalone hunt is just waiting for us to plan it out... Let's go on your adventure!

That looks great! Any viz is cool up there. I remember a "bump your forehead into the rocks" kind of dive near Petrolia. Can be tough! Nice pics!

Generally, yes.  Some years ago I was diving with Domenic up around Trinidad.  We'd hung out on the kayaks watching some whales in shallow water for an hour before we got in for our dive.  The water was extra cold that day - high 40's.  After diving for a while I could feel my hands getting too cold and I was losing mobility.  Then I found a 10.5" ab - the only abalone we found that day.  My hands got hot. 

I get some cuts and sometimes hit an urchin, but I like having better sensitivity when I reach in holes that may hold the big animals that I'm looking for.

Thanks for another wonderful report from the cove Eric.  I promise to come up there and fish/dive with you before Winter this year.  I love that place!!!
