Remember to practice safe knots, because big fish don't just break your line, they also break your heart.

I was hoping to make this year's TRW but I'll be on my honeymoon.  My jiu jitsu professor and good friend, Matt Darcy, will be there fishing in his first kayak fishing tourney and I'd appreciate it if my bros. could help make him feel welcome.  Thank you in advance!

Hey gang, I just got a great question about the rules that I wanted to clarify.  Any natural baits (herring, chovies, etc...) must be dead.  No live bait can be used for this one.

How exactly are you going to police that one?  Hitchhiker lingcod also out?

It's the ocean.  We aren't fishing for bass in clear lake.

Hey Jef, could you point out where this rule is posted on the Rockfish Wars web page?  I can't seem to find it.  Thanks.

And echoing Crash's question: does that mean hitchhiker lings don't count?  Those tend to be the biggest lings!

Since we all know it isn't there, i'll quote the relevant rule:

Quote
As always, Department of Fish and Wildlife rules and regulations apply.

That means that once you have RCG or lingcod on board you are limited to 2 hooks and one rod, so that is a pretty significant constraint on making bait later in the day.  But fishing live bait in the ocean is certainly allowed by DFW as is gaffing or netting a hitchhiker lingcod.

I still don't see how this gets policed and it seems arbitrary.  I understand it for a C&R bass tournament.  This is not a C&R bass tournament.

Hey all just saw that Nate had an accident yesterday at Trinity Lake.  He broke his leg bad enough that it required an airlift out and surgery at UC Davis.  There is more info posted at LCKA facebook page, but since we were just talking about him and had folks asking about him I thought I'd pass this along.

What I don't get is are our local hospitals not capable of handling a broken leg surger and why couldn't Redding handle it?  A broken leg doesn't seem that complicated.  I broke a couple fingers and they wanted to do surgery and put pins in it.  I said he'll no cuz I was going to Costa Rica and didn't want to deal with that bs.  I had the doc slap a cast on and I even tried surfing with it on.  My fingers are fine.  I find that doctors often over due procedures.  Sorry for the rant, but I have strong feelings towards doctors and the way they do business sometimes, dentists included.

He is young so hopefully he will recover quickly.  It shouldn't be out of the realm that he can still recover in time for TRW.  Hopefully they had good insurance cuz those helicopter rides aren't cheap.

The live bait thing may be related to how I think it's against DFW regs to have a live bait tourney on fresh water.

That's true for inland bass tournaments.  Artificial lures only, no bait or scents.  You can still use bait for catfish tourneys, trout derbys, etc.

I am working to get clarification on the live bait situation.

**After six years of doing this tournament, the question had never been raised before.  The use of natural bait, live or dead, is fine.  I am only the messenger and I apologize for any confusion, lost sleep, heart palpitations, poor gas mileage or any other symptoms the previous information may have caused.  Thank you, come again**
