Greetings fellow kayak fishermen,

So I normally go rockfishing up at Ocean Cove but this weekend I’ll be with the family at New Brighton State park and would like to do some kayak fishing while there.

Any suggestions on what to target and what tackle/bait to use?

Any place nearby that I should check out for good launch/fishery?

Much appreciated

Launch off the beach at new Brighton, the farther north on the beach the calmer, paddle out north you'll see a yellow bouy they call sponge bob, fish around that bouy... The typical rockfish baits and swim baits will work.. You can paddle farther north (if you are willing) past the capitola pier, fish along the kelp beds and outside of them off pleasure point and around the mile bouy.. You should have a good day, if you leave early, you'll be off the water by 2 with the wind at your back (typically) on your way in... Bring a set of wheeleze or a kart and lock it up near the ramp.. Good luck, welcome to the forum.. If you plan on coming back give me a heads up is be happy to show you some spots.. Just be prepared to paddle!

I live about 5 mins away from Newbies.. These are my preferred stomping grounds, but as stated be ready to paddle! Gate opens to parking access below the campgrounds at 8am sometimes earlier.. But normally 8. Who knows you could get into some Seabass or flatties on you're journey!! Once again, good luck!

You can try for rocklingcabs by the reefs/kelp beds by Capitola OR target perch and stripers in the surf.

FYI.  I saw a vid less than two ago from Specialized Helicopters with footage of multiple GWS hanging out in that area.  I think they saw 8-10 of them and counted at least 4 people within 100 yards of them.

They've always been there.. Only thing that hasn't are those stupid helicopters.. They're nothing to worry about, unless you want to just give up ocean fishing all together  :smt005

If you want to start earlier, you can launch just to the right (as you face the water) of the Capitola Wharf. The SC harbor is another option for launching, and from there you can get to the west side of SC.
