RIP  :smt011 Yet another Kayak death due to no PFD :smt012 Avoidable :smt009 Another widow :smt010 Fatherless children  :smt010

MY PROMISE...

I promise to wear a proper PFD So that I can give others time to rescue me, or, in the event of my death on the water, no one will have to search for my carcass wasting time, money, energy, not to mention endangering themselves to find me... I owe this to others in the community in the pursuit of my recreational pleasures. Don't be mad at me When I badger you if you get on the water without one, because I care about you and your family. Seriously and sincerely Signed, Ron McGuire, Weimarian

Take the pledge or make your own. In our group or not, let's stop this from happening!!! Carry a second PFD, Beat the non wearer senseless on the beach... You might be saving his/her life :smt002

Share on facebook if you will.... Let's get this out there! So sad when someone dies in our sport. Sadder when a life jacket would have made the difference between life and death...

my new name should be Ostridge. Got my head in the sand. Going fishing and letting go of the other stuff I can't control anyway!

Having been swamped in the past after I rolled and lost a hatch, I was glad I was wearing it.  I can attest I wear mine, and have never thought twice about it. its nice to have a buddy there to help you, but there is always that time they are too far away, battery is dead, your radio failed,  and other conditions, that can make it a really bad situation.  I thank God and my NCKA brothers for help that day.

My kids learned the slogan "Three buckles, white knuckles" first time ever on the water. Put the PFD on, and the straps need to be snug enough to squeeze blood out of your knuckles, hence the slogan. Protection is key. Protection was not always the policy of Brockman, hence the kids.... :smt007

I had an instance years ago, maybe 2001 or so. I was heading out to surf my waveski on a big December swell.
The break was pretty far outside on a long strand beach. I contemplated not wearing the PFD since it could be restrictive when surfing. I had surfed the place that summer without the PFD and never had a problem. This was winter though, and the water colder, so I put it on and went out.

Well, I got tossed by a 10' wave and just got pummeled. The yak leash broke and the boat went in without me, leaving me and my paddle far outside in breaking surf.
I was absolutely done in by the time I swam to shore. I collapsed in the sand and lay there contemplating my brush with death.
There is no doubt in my mind that I would have drowned that day if not for the PFD.

so, they work :smt003. I wear mine because it can save my life.

Sad news indeed, anybody who fishes with me including my little ones know the importance of a PFD. Most days I even put an extra one in my hull incase I pass somebody who doesn't have one.

I bought a PFDbefore I bought my Kayak.  I don't care how hot or cold the air is or how flat or choppy the water might be.  I put it on before I launch and it stays on until I pull the yak out of the water.  Same goes for anyone that wants to come with me.  Just like wearing a bike helmet you wear it or you do not get to ride with us.

never met a Dry Fly I didn't like

Sac fire pulled a body out of the river right before I launched today. :smt012 The news reporter that I talked to made it sound like the body was dressed for fishing. :smt011

There were a lot of official rescue people there today. 2 boats, several trucks, lots of LEO's, and not a lot of the normal shore goers.

According to the news that body was there for a while.
Caught under a log in 10 FOW.
Looks more like homicide than accidental drowning while fishing.

Wouldn't be the first time a victim of foul play was found in the American.
Earlier this month a homicide victim was pulled out 1/4 mile downstream from where this body was found.

The American River Parkway is loaded with drug addicts, homeless, and sexual predators between Gristmille and The mouth. Be aware of your surroundings and don't leave valuables in your car.

Will be doing a lot of salmon fishing this season through this area and I always see broken windows and hear victims stories in months of August -October.

And the parkway is a GUN FREE ZONE so don't come packing heat.
The best warden we had passed this last year, and have yet to see a new one who is willing to step up to fill his shoes, best bet is call Sac Sheriff to report any crime. Or 911.

And the launch at Howe in the afternoon on hot days is pretty crowded with druggies and drunks.

Thank you so much Prop 47!
It's working so well!!!!!!!
