After the wet+chilly affair at GSX last weekend, I think I'm finally going to buy a drysuit.  Given that I've never ventured into the drysuit world, I'm wondering if folks here have specific brands or models they prefer.  Any recommendations would be much appreciated!

Here you go Chris and its on sale:  http://www.outdoorplay.com/Kokatat-Hydrus-3L-SuperNova-Angler-Paddling-Suit?sc=7&category=175

I also own the Tempest Jacket and matching pants.  The hood is a great and kept me dry in rainstorms.

+1 on the SuperNova Angler Paddling Suit Mel, might need that jacket too to match mine.

The Tempest jacket won't go over the drysuit because it has a wrist gasket and neoprene neck collar.   I have a similar jacket like this I put on top of my drysuit to keep my head dry when it rains.

I did the same thing after freezing my butt off in my wetsuit at the last rainy GS.  I've been using the Kokatat hydrus 3L suit Mel posted for fishing in the Sierra in winter and when it rains/snows.  A cheap rain jacket with hood along with good base layers and I've been comfortable all day long in all conditions, including tourney day at GSX.  I still prefer the wetsuit on the ocean if not raining.

Of all the discussions on wetsuit vs dry suit I've never seen this comment, so my question would be,  why?  I'm guessing because it offers more foolproof protection in case of a scenario where you end up spending a long time in the water.  But that's just a guess on my part.

Don't forget to use activejunky.com and route to outdoorplay so you can get 11% cash back! In the end the dry suit should come out to be ~$438.

I love my drysuit but I'm leaning towards only using it in bad weather. I do tend to forget sometimes to close the relief zipper after washing  down the mirage drive [emoji12]. I won't use it for crabs since I don't want there claws grabbing it either. Only issue I have with farmer Johns is when I'm doing a multi-day fishing trip, after one day of salmon trolling it can smell pretty bad lol

+1 (or 2 or 3) on the Angler paddling suit recommendation. I'm 100% happy with mine. Keeps me warm and dry. On hot days it does get stuffy, but it's head and shoulders above a wetsuit in terms of comfort even when I get sweaty.

what happens when you hook your drysuit?  sew it up, tenacious tape?  i'd love to invest in one but i know i'll end up w/some holes eventually.

Kokatat will pressure test the suit for 20.00 and fix any holes. I was told by the warranty guy that if you ever wanted to change the neoprene neck to a rubber gasket making it a full drysuit that could be done.

Thank you for all the responses so far.  I now have some good leads to follow in my drysuit research.  Definitely want to spend the time looking at the pros and cons of each before dropping the $$ on these things!

Although the cold+wet day at GSX was the tipping point for me to include a drysuit in my arsenal, I'd already been thinking about it for a while.  I get tired of pedaling a Hobie while wearing a farmer john of a wetsuit.  Puts pressure on my knees and I develop a rash after pedaling for long distances.  That could be because my farmer john is an old, thick 7mm beast.  But the thought of just sliding into a drysuit, zipping up, and being impervious to the elements (with the proper layering) is too tempting to pass up.

Stohlquist EZ is another option.  I picked up one last month and have been happy with it.  It's a little less expensive than the kokatat.

One good thing about the Supernova Angler is that it is codura reinforced in areas that a kayak fisherman is likely to wear holes such as the knees, elbows, seat, and lap.
