The tournament was a friendly and well run event. Seventy anglers competed for cash payouts, blown glass trophies, and bragging rights. Tourney day conditions were excellent with three foot swells at an eight second interval a layer of fog came and went during the day. Coming down Morro Bay Rd from the Northeast Morro Rock is impressive. The hamlet of Baywood-Los Osos is an interesting place, a bit of a SolCal beach town vibe crossed with an accessible artistic San Luis Obispo County one. Stringers were slightly different from those we get further north with more Brown Rockfish and Grass Rockfish than I'm used to seeing mixed in with nice Vermilions. There was some discussion of Izod's recent rod and reel sheepshead(a beefy fish)and a good deal of laughter about tiny Calico Rockfish whose max length is apparently 8inches. The Cabazone caught were big, lings on tournament day ran to about 30inches, several rockfish over 23inches were brought in including a 23 3/4 inch beauty which clinched the tournament win for Ryan Howell. Another notable catch was a Wolf Eel which went 49 inches I think. It was a pleasure to be around our Central and South Coast kayak fishing brothers and sisters. Morro Bay State Campground is nice, it seemed like much of the abundant coastal access was free.
