Last night on the way home I was on a surface street that had a turn lane in the middle. A guy was standing there in the turn lane waiting to cross the rest of the street. Very busy street.... I stopped so he could finish crossing the road (legally required in California) The guy behind me, decided to pass that asshat (ME) that had stopped in front of him.   he Pulled onto shoulder and gunned it to go by me, flipped me off!!! As I saw him do that I screamed RUN!!!! to the pedestrian. He lit out and just made it. His shoe got knocked off and hair whipped by the mirror on the truck... If you ever find yourself in this situation either behind the wheel, on foot, or behind someone that inexplicably stopped in the middle of a lane... Think twice before whipping around or walking out past the nice guy that stopped without LOOKING for some dickhead that couldn't wait 30 Seconds.... Pickup Truck driver Did NOT STOP and is in Jail for hit and run this morning (Ya, that flip flop- he knocked off the guy's foot). = Life ruined. Now I'll probably have to go to court and testify sometime over this. I'm just glad only adrenaline and panic happened. Be careful out there, slow down and be safe. Could be  YOUR  life your saving....

When I see someone trying to cross the street legally (crosswalk) I will always slow down way way before i get there and i make sure no one is behind me or if there is someone behind me i briefly flash my hazard.

I also witness a lot of drivers will stop if they see pedestrian trying to cross the street illegally (jaywalking). This happens a lot and is a common thing. I know we want to be a good person but if we promote jaywalking, that will lead to more jaywalking and endanger lives not only for for pedestrians but to other drivers as well as they are not expecting to stop when there isn't any crosswalks. we have to hold driver and pedestrian accountable to follow the law.

in your case you did everything right. If it is a very busy street there should be crosswalk lights. we have one here that will lit up with flashing lights so bright that it draws your eyes to them.

Yeah that's what I thought as well but now no one stops and the school bus don't turn on the lights anymore. I think he realized that.. number one there isn't any crosswalk and this isn't a residential area that have homes on both sides. one side (his side) is residential but to the left is factory commercial buildings that only have a couple entrance on the whole block.

The applicable statute is Vehicle Code section 22454, and is applicable only if the school bus has both lights and a sign. If the schoolbus is stopped to load or unload schoolchildren, and has its lights flashing and sign out, vehicles on the same side must stop. Vehicles on the opposite side must also stop unless it is a divided highway (one with barriers or open space between two roadways) or a multiple lane highway (two or more lanes of travel in both directions). Violation of this law will get you a $625 ticket.
