My wife bought me a Hobie outfitter last week. Does anyone have experience of transporting it on a set of J hooks?

No experience with j racks . Its so wide!  Icarry mine upside down on my lumber rack and it barely leaves room for my revo. Have fun with this family  truckster as I call it. You will definitely want to upgrade the rudder.

Look up your model of J-hook's weight capacity and then compare it to the weight of thd Outfitter. Also, the Outfitter is really wide with a hull design that puts a hump right down the middle. It might not sit properly in the J-rack. I usually carry mine upside down or sitting on its side with a support bar.

My Revo 13 is lighter and narrower and doesn't fit in my J racks very well.  I expect transporting it upside down is best.

Much appreciated! Questions, what is the benefit to have it upside down? Is it safer? Easier? What is not working well with the stock rudder?

I had one years ago and transported it right-side-up with Mako Saddles and Hullie Rollers on Thule load bars.  At that time, my yak car was a Honda Accord.

My outback fits poorly on the Volvo J rack - too high and tends to topple in wind or sharp curves.  I got rid of the j rack, added padding to bars, and just strap it upside down on the bars.

The shape of the hull prevents it from sitting securely without saddles.  Round hull against flat bar doesnt work.  We flip it over so that the kayak sits on the gunwales. You'll have 4 solid contact points with the bar.  Nice and solid = safer.

Swapping the rudder will give you better responsiveness. The stock rudder seems outmatched by the kayak... slow to respond to rudder adjustments.
