Shad are in the AR, and you don't need an anchor to fish for them.

Rob and I were both out earlier this week and we caught shad without anchoring.

Methods:

Slip bobber - try to get your shad jigs 1-2 foot off the bottom and drift down with your bobber giving it a jerk every now and again.

Jigging- Put enough weight on so that you can vertical jig for shad. This method is most effective at the tail of a riffle.

Drift fishing- Use the eddy to travel against the current, and cast into the current and let your line arc down current. You want enough weight to tick bottom a few times during the arc.

I have used whole shad for ling bait, but it is not effective for me because they produce a ton of drag. Shad fillets are great catfish bait. Shad are also effective bait for other fishes, but I'll let you figure that one out.

I hope this helps!

They are a myth. People are photoshopping tarpon into Facebook Profile pics, and sharing online. Matt is the worst at it. Fricken shad, all a shad is are those little bait fish that are a few inches long. AR shad, are just that, bring your AR and fire for effect.
Live your life, the way you want to be remembered. Don't have any regrets, we only get this one dance to make it count. Start at your eulogy, and work backwards.
