Just up grade.  The standard paddles that come with a Hobie are cheap.  You can get a better one on E-bay or Craigslist.

I would get a Fiberglass shaft and not a metal shaft.  Also, because Hobies are wide.  I would get a longer paddle.  Like a 230 to 240 cm.  You can get a way with a 220 cm.  But, I would not go any shorter.

I like a thick (wide) paddle blade.  But, my buddy likes a thin blade.  The shape of the blade makes a difference.  But, since it is your first paddle.  I think any kind will do.  After, you have tried different paddles and makers.  I think you will find one you will like.

Always, the lighter the better.

I have a P15 and use a 240cm Werner Camano paddle. I cannot imagine using anything shorter.
You will also use your paddle a lot more than you think. Definitely spend the extra $$ and get something as light as you can. You will always be able to use it on your next kayak too.  :smt002
