Hit Moss during outgoing low tide from 2:30-5:00 for a fun pokepoling session.Kept two large monkeyface eels (one 24.5") and a chunky grass rock and released six eels and two shaker cabs.

Ate the rockfish for dinner and the anago is marinading now.I can't wait for May, but at least I got a little taste. :smt003

Nice job! So what do you think? Do they taste better catching them with a hook or with a spear?

Just curious.........

Mahi, I actually caught them with a hook.I use a long bamboo pokepole with a 18" leader and a 2/0 hook. You can still keep rf if you catch them from shore.
They taste about the same as the ones I catch from the yak, but I miss the ling and big reds. :smt003

Alex,I'll try to post pics of the eel dish.I'm pretty much trying to copy the way you did it.That looked really good. :cook

Thats a pretty big grassie Aaron! Those are one of my favorite kinds of RF. Very tasty when fried.
And good job on releaseing the cabbies unharmed too.

Thanks for the report,
PK

Wow... Aaron... that's cool!
I never new Moss was a place to go pokepoling.... let alone catch monkeyface eels.  Those are the first pics on this site that I've seen of a successful poling catch. Congrats!

I've been wanting to try that for some time.

Thanks guys.If you're going to be in the area around a minus tide let me know and I'll try to hook up with you.I've had some good times pokepoling this winter. At the right tide you can catch plenty of eel.In fact,a couple weeks ago I kept a bucket full of them and ate eel for three days straight...I think I kind of got burned out on them as they are a bit more fishy tasting than rockies and stink when you clean them.
Even though I've been getting a good amount of meat off of the larger eels, I think I'm going to start releasing them all.The rockfish was very tasty though. With all the rocks and ling I caught last year,I think my wife and I are going through fish withdrawl. :smt002
