Probably going to be sucked into buying a travel trailer in the next month or so.  I know this is a long-shot, but I am looking for

Full sized pickup capable of towing 8,000 lbs +
Has to have 4 full doors
Ideally 4x4, but will consider 2WD if the price is right
Newer rather than older, would like it to be on the reliable side, so maybe 2008+

I've been scouting the market on Toyota Tundra Crewmax's and am leaning towards that, but not set on it.  No Dodge Rams please.....had too many bad experiences with them.

If you happen to have or know of someone looking to offload theirs that sorta fits the criteria, please let me know, thanks!

I guess it all depends on the specific truck.  I'd love to stay under 20k if possible, but can push higher if it makes sense

fwiw i picked up a 2015 titan pro 4x a few months back, it's pretty sick.  found it on autotrader, got a great deal (i think), delivered to my door from utah!  a lot of nice trucks on norcal craigslist but folks just want way too much/more money for similar equipped f150s, tundras, ram 1500's with a fair amount of or even high mileage.  some issues for some of the pre '08 titans i believe but according to the forums pretty easy to fix.  good luck.

I know....its made me consider buying new since the difference in price is so small, but I have a tough time justifying the price for a 3rd/pleasure vehicle.

If you look at the volume of leased trucks that will come back from 3 year leases, you'll see a bubble coming in 2018/19. This significant influx of lease returns will flood the used market and also deflate the new vehicle prices. I think 1-2 year old trucks are something like 30% leases vs 2010 where they were 8-10%. I have been shopping myself and wishing I could hold for this lease return bubble.

That's good to know.  Hopefully I can find something to get me by until the floodgates open.

Would you only be using the truck to tow or also for other applications? If its solely towing you'll have a much happier time driving it if you opted for a 3/4 ton truck. Most modern 1/2 tons will tow 8k, but they won't be remotely as happy while doing it.

5% towing a 7k lb travel trailer, 95% other.  I understand the limitations of half tons, and am open to a 3/4 ton diesel, just waiting on the right deal to come my way.

Ah in that case, definitely consider an eco boost SCREW F150. You should be able to find plenty around in your price range. I know I did when I was shopping for a truck last year.

I'll find you a truck and PM you tomorrow! I'm an internet sales manager for the Future Automotive group. I'll do it at my employee pricing, still sorting thru all the Memorial weekend trade-ins.

I know that the newer 1/2 tons will tow 8K lbs, but their brake systems are not designed for stopping a heavy load. If the trailer is 7K lbs, go with a 3/4 tons truck. Especially since you will be going to the coast withit; highway 1 is a truck break workout! You also have to consider the whole family and all your gear. Don't get the minimum truck size, it's not the right choice for what you be doing.
