I've been cleaning up a rod that mr. Piscean hooked me up with, and am almost ready to put it on the salt. Wanted to know if anyone has any ideas on how to smooth out guides if I want to run braid on this baby.

I have already used vinegar and baking soda with a mild abrasive to get rid of corrosion,  and was thinking about using clear nail polish.

Any ideas would be great!

Aloha

I could have, and may do that next time I need to smooth guides out.

Right now I am looking for something I can coat the interior of the guide with to smooth out the gaps in the metal

Nail polish might seem hard to you and me but I suspect that braid would cut right thru it in short order.

Epoxyglue & then shape it with fine sandpaper?  Might last for a short bit but honestly, braid will cutbthru almost anything.  Think about having new guides wrapped on the rod?

Are the guides coated/plated, or solid stainless?

If they're solid, maybe just take a Dremel to em using a polishing or sanding tool.

that's an old Ugly stik Tiger rod I think, right? Man that rod slayed a lot of fish. First halibut over 20# and first WSB ever taken on that rod. Good times.

guides are solid metal, probably plated if I remember right. The metal on the older rods does corrode worse than newer models.

I would try finer grades of iron oxide sandpaper.

replacing the guides would be a last resort, but then you could get proper meant-for-braid ceramic lined guides.

If the guides are plated, don't use me suggestion above... You don't want to expose the metal under the plating, as it will probably rust/corrode easily.

Take it to a tackle shop and ask how much to replace the eyes. Don't take a chance on losing a fish of a lifetime or your next meal. If the rod not worth it get a new one. All the above methods are not going to work well especially with braid.

0000 steel wool Maybe, I use it to clean water spots on glass.. Should be fine enough so it won't gouge...maybe run some polishing compound with a towel to finish it off.

Eric is one rough guide  :smt002 :smt002

@Piscean, this is a Garcia gamefish series. I think you said it was one of your pop's workhorse rods, so junking it is clearly not an option. I will probably just run mono with it until I can get up to outdoor pro shop to have the guides replaced.

Im looking forward to trying out the handle wraps i put on there :smt003

aloha,

Isao
