Not familiar with that area as much as I am in Mendo. Thats usually a good day.  If the period goes from 10 seconds up to 15 or more it will get rougher closer to shore.

It still doesn't hurt to see what the wind is and if there is a secondary swell that may cause problems.  NOAA buoys are a good place to look.

Also check wave direction. If you are in a protective cove that is usually protected by the NW swell and it switches to a west swell the likelihood rolling waves could be breaking in spots that are usually protected goes up.

And if you use magic seaweed it has stars representing how good the surf will be.  Not for divers but for surfers.  So more stars for us is bad.  Blue stars are how good the swell will be and grayed out ones mean potential increase in swells because of wind.

Some locations rarely report any stars and some report 2-3 stars most of the time so you need to decide on each location how the stars relate to the diving.

So for example up in Ft bragg I look a multiple sites to see if it is going to be better to shore dive or kayak dive.  On longer period swell days I may skip a shore dive and go in a kayak because once out there it's usually not as rough unless you are close to rocks or shore.

Personally 4-5 stars are days I would skip unless I visually looked at the water and it was looking good.

Good info there. There are threads here on NCKA that discuss many sites for wave forecast, energy and direction. Direction can be huge depending on which way your proposed launch/dive site is facing.

Duane, we need to get you down to the south coast a bit, as Point Arena Cove, Anchor Bay and Gualala all have good dive sites and are in Mendo.

I know.  Was waiting for the invite.  I love new places just not dragging my kayak down a cliff or through huge surf.  My body can't take it.

Are interested in any hook and line when it opens or are you only interested in diving?

Do you have wheels?

Thanks for the invite.  Not sure about Sunday as I may be leaving town because it was reporting rain up here.

Fisherman X ,

I have two sets of wheels.  It's to hard for me to not get irritated with rock fish line fishing and not Jump in and just shoot them so don't do it often.  But definitely interested in Salmon, halibut or other stuff that's not on my normal menu.
