Usually if you ask a Japanese person about eating shark, they turn their nose up disgusted and give you the "EEEWWW" face. They'll tell you that Japanese people don't eat shark. Not only is that not true but they also serve up shark sahimi which I partook in on my last trip there. Way up north in the city of Akita there's a small town called Hachimori. It's a small port town and has one of the best fish markets in Japan. Not the biggest but has a ton of variety and the people there are great. You can sample all there fish rght there! I ate dinner that night at my wife's Uncle's house when a plate of light pink sashimi came out. When I asked her uncle what it was, he said shark. When I tried to ask what kind of shark her uncle said "Shark" and motioned to try it. Fair enough. I imagined it to be really gamey and tough but I didn't want to offend anyone by sniffing or poking at it. So I gave it a quick dash of soy, wasabi, and down the hatch. SHARK SAHIMI IS GOOOOOD! Not only was it not gamey but very delicate and pretty nice tasting. I ended that night eating quite a bit. The next day we went to the fish market to get a look at the shark and it was unbelivably similar looking in size and features to our Thresher sharks here. It was called a Katou Shark. I looked online for a picture of one but can't find one. Anyway, a hellova experience!

I'm game with any kind of Sushi (but hate Uni the most - Chucke loves that nasty stuff :smt011)....never tried shark but I'm willing to try. A few years back, I brought a Fort Ross vermilion to one of my favorite Sushi joints in Belmont and had it sashimi style - prepared by the Sushi man....good stuff right there :smt007

Can't forget the trip that some us did at Stillwater (North).....

Bob Neal was hand feeding us fresh oysters in a half shell while we (Chuck and I)  were pounding abalone (courtesy of Stuart and Fred Savage) to deep fry and sashimi as well......gooood stuff right there  :smt002

It was cool to think that we were living off what we caught that weekend - nothing but fresh fish, uni and abalone :smt007

i hope one would freeze any local fish before eating sashimi style because of the concentrations of parasites in these waters. i dont remember the last time i got rf without a worm bonus in it: )

Someplace I read for west coast it was something like 90% but in 30 ought yrs fishing carmel to mendo coast it seems like it might be higher for local fish

Mooch read the parasite article one of the marine biologists posted here Spoiled my fun but I'm glad I read it Pretty gruesome and mostly incurable The sushi fishery does that flash freeze thing for a reason

Until a couple years back if I gutted the fish on the yak or the beach I ate salmon hearts right out of the fish Bad idea

The fresh sushi is definitely tasty but I'd rather eat toxic waste knowing what I know now

Bet your sushi man isn't Japanese

Good man!

Looks great!  :smt007 I'm down with Vermillion sashimi for sure. This conversation has gone on in this board before and the word from the fish and game was that if you find a paraste, you just cut it out and no worries. I'm guessing Mooch's sushi man did the same if he found some. No harm done if you ask me! Maybe that's why they slice sashmi so thin anyway.  :smt002

Nothing like fresh sushi but F&G is giving out 'fishy' info if they're telling you it's safe to eat as long as you pull out the mature parasites

I'm pretty sure it's the tiny little offspring you can't see that you have to worry about

When it came up before somebody said something like 'you guys worry too much, live a little' Worrying isn't something I'm known for in general but certain things I'm definitely chicken about, like walking around for the remainder of my youth :cowboy_smoke: with nasty parasites crawling around my insides Like I said, gimme toxic waste any day, you can have the parasites

Mooch, read the article before you swallow your next bite of tasty fresh sushi Definitely a worthwhile read

Blowfish does not have much taste.  But, it does give you a tingle feeling.  Much like what "Coke" does.  I have done "Coke" .........But, never inhaled.  Just like one of our recent Presidents. :smt002

I eat Yellowtail sashimi... anyone have a link to the article...?  Sometimes, albacore, yellowfin, and other tunas when available from friends on offshore trips, those fish are usually in a brine....  :smt119

Excellent fish, I worked for a large record company in Tokyo for many years so got to use their budget, at length, to entertain my clients. We used to go to this one restaurant that only had Tora Fugu (Tiger Blowfish). It has an unbelievably rich taste but no tinglies, sorry Ken. They make huge sashmi plates, broiled, fried.. just so good!! Thank god I never had to pay though. Our biggest night we spent $700 for 4 people in one night not even including drinks.

If anyone's ever in Tokyo I can gve you the directions to the best Blowfsh in Japan.

Japan's a little far off the travel priorities at the moment - I'm lucky I can get down to Peet's for my coffee
