Just a reminder for you DOTY players on a couple of issues:

1. Please make sure that we can see in the whole fish pic that the mouth is closed and touching and the entire length of the fish.

2. Please remember that since 2015 the rules state that "You are not allowed to stretch or pull the lips to gain extra length."

I know sometimes the fish is all stiff and dead with the mouth open, but please keep your fingers out of the fishies lips to avoid any "lip-pulling" issues that may force us to DQ a fish...cuz that's no fun for anyone.  :smt009

Here are some examples of lip-pulling that would be DQd under current rules:

http://doty.norcalkayakanglers.com/catches/1008

http://doty.norcalkayakanglers.com/catches/1079

And here are some examples of how to close a fishies mouth by putting fingers in eye sockets or on nose instead of in lips.

Any questions just let me know!

Sincerely,

Jim

Bump.

Please note that this is also an issue for the AOTY guys and one that will be enforced this year:

Quote
We will be enforcing the “no pulling/stretching of the lips” rule from here on out.  This isn’t a “new” rule (see AOTY Rule #2), but it wasn’t fully enforced in years past.  Here are a couple examples of entries that would be disqualified.

http://aoty.norcalkayakanglers.com/catch/image/3644/spot17.jpg
http://aoty.norcalkayakanglers.com/catch/image3/3667/IMG_3417.jpg

Bottom line is that you shouldn't put your fingers in the lips when taking a DOTY or AOTY pic.

No need to, if your fingers are in the lips the lips ARE being stretched, and we will be DQing fish....and pissing people off cuz nobody likes getting their fish DQd.

And, no we won't be doing point deductions for "smaller infractions". If the committee decides the pic does not meet the criteria or violates a rule, it will be DQd.

It sucks, but people need to realize that it is THEIR responsibility to submit pics that meet the criteria, not OUR responsibility to bend the rules and make exceptions around their sub-par submissions.

The DOTY committee will be considering amending the "lip-pulling/stretching" rule and making it more clear for 2017 and future (no fingers in lips PERIOD), but for now if we see fingers in lips we are well within the rules to DQ it since if the fingers are in the lips they are taking up space and extending the length of the fish.

So take one extra sec and take a good pic.

Please.

Yeah we definitely need to say no  pinching lips either if that's considered stretching or pulling.

On my recent DQ'd fish I only pinched mouth until it was closed.  I totally understand if you can't tell by the picture so moving on.  I know it was not pulling and stretching and thought the rules said it was okay to close mouth do to rigor.  As to not have that happen in the future can we zip tie the mouth shut or stick a knife all the way through the mouth.  I will definitely adjust how the pics are taken and try the eyeball / bottom lip method next time.

+1  It was a complete surprise to me to find out that pinching is essentially considered pulling.

Thanks for understanding Duane...

I can probably count on one hand the number of fish we have DQd in DOTY in the past 5 years...

But looking back I probably should have DQd more, but I'm not perfect and do most of my verifying on my phone, and am a big softie and hate DQing fish and bumming people out.  :smt005

Zipties can work if needed...pinching the eyeball or nose does as well...

I got desperate one night last year and was alone so used some shooting line (from a stringer that broke) through the eyeball and out bottom of jaw...worked great!!

At least it's early in the season and we can modify the way we do it.  I like the surgery shooting line method.

Here is a tip if you have to wait till you get home to take photo of fish!

Instead of putting the fish in a cooler of ice try putting them in a cooler of water/ sea water. This will keep the fish nice and supple. Perfect for a good measurement!
