Anyone planning on fishing the smud derby this weekend at Rancho seco? Thinking I may go.

I went last year and it was a dud for me.

Not that you shouldn't go.  I'd actually go (as I'm a glutton for punishment) if my daughter didn't have softball and my wife wasn't dragging me to a home & garden show.

Definitely talk to the guys on the forum for some intel.  I went in fishing blind and that was half my problem.

They are stocking trout as we speak. I was there for easter and go at least once a week. I live 10 minutes away. The trout are fickle, but Scott V kills them with his flys. My buddy has  wbeen getting them bouncung orange power eggs off the bottom. I've caught a few on a few on a wooly bugger. Hit the shallow water near the banks and in the coves.
There was another post a while back. Do a search. I think Dr.Habanero may be out there with his kids. Presonally, I'm going to skip the derby and mop up the left overs next week. It's going to be a mad house out there. TONS of people.

Yeah, when I was there for the SMUD derby last year, I happened to roll into the far cove with the launch ramp as they were planting and there were so many people on the dock that a portion of it was a FOOT underwater.  And then the tangles that ensued when they were allowed to start fishing was hilarious.  :smt044

Great place to fish.  I got 28 fish last Saturday, but only one of them was a trout.  "Trophy" trout get planted Friday and all weekend long.  Just park your yak at either launch ramp and wait for the truck.  Most people sit in the cove at the launch ramp on the other side of the dam road.

I'll be there Friday afternoon looking for bass, crappie and bluegills.  If I get a trout that would be nice.

My biggest trout during a derby was 8.75 pounds.  I got 2nd place.
So long and thanks for all the fish!!!

It is a great place to fish on a regular day. I was nailing  the perch sight fishing from the bank on Sunday.

I was there up until 1:30 on Sunday and top fish was 6.22 lbs at that time. Only caught one 2.74 lbs on a blue and silver kastmaster. For the 18 and under, two 9 year olds caught a 5.34 and 4.86 lbs. Overall fun time.
