Hey guys, I just recently moved to Marin (Sausalito), bought a kayak, and am looking to get into some fishing/crabbing. I just need to figuring what the hell I'm doing and the rest should be easy...

I'm very new to fishing and kayaking in general, so I'll be looking for broad info as well as tips specific to my area. Looking forward to learning from everyone here!

Welcome!

And, once you figure out what you're doing, let me know, since I'm still working on that...
Are you pondering what I’m pondering?

I guess I'll kick things off with question #1. Is anybody here into crabbing?

I'm looking to order a couple of crab nets/traps - what do I need to look out for in terms of regulations? Anything specific to doing it from a kayak vs a pier? Thanks in advance!

LOL, crabbing fanatics on here, (not me but I'll give you a lead),

This year the season stayed closed statewide due to domoic acid (poison) in crab, then a month or so ago it opened  south of ? not sure of the point but Bodega bay area is still closed, Half Moon Bay area opened.

For the best info you need to get up to 10 posts then the members only reports section will open for you, look back around Nov of 2014, tons of crabbing reports with gear and location info intertwined in the reports. Please don't use bullshit posts like "WTG" to get up to 10, but sincere questions and comments and reports are always welcome.

If you're gonna fish CA, required reading IMO, they're really messy in terms and layout of the regs so I suggest reading both books entirely, then puke, then read again, then ask questions on the board.

This is a great how-to-crab resource as well:

But like Dale said...this year is a LOT more complicated cuz of the health related closures...

Thanks again for the info. More questions for anyone willing to answer:

The season/closure issues only affect dungeness crab, correct? So am I free to go out for other crab species year round?

Are there any crab in Richardson Bay, or would I be wasting my time there?

Thanks again everybody, and sorry for the 20 questions. With the weather getting nicer I'm getting pretty eager to get out there!

Be sure to check the rules.

29.85. CRABS.
(a) Dungeness crabs (Cancer magister):
(1) Closure: Dungeness crab may not be taken from or possessed if taken from San Francisco Bay and San Pablo Bay, plus all their tidal bays, sloughs and estuaries between the Golden Gate Bridge and Carquinez Bridge.

Welcome to the madness.  :smt006

Nice, where do you do it from shore? And what kind of nets/traps do you use?
