Quick question... Can I fit the transducer AND power cables for a Lowrance Hook 5  through one of Hobie's new thru-hull fittings?

I know that the thru hull kit includes rubber inserts made for passing two cables, but the cables on my new Hook 5 seem very fat... Much fatter than the cables of my old Mark 4. Just want to be sure they'll both fit before a I order the Hobie kit...

Anyone tried this yet?

Thanks,

Alex

Hobie now has two thru hull fittings - the single or the three-way.  If the connectors are the same size at the Lowrance Chirp units, it should fit through both.  Post a picture of the connectors.

I'll snap a pic when I get home. The Hook 5 is essentially a rebranded Elite 5 Chirp. Other than graphics, the only difference I'm aware of is that the Elite 5 Chirp units ships out with a battery/NMEA cable and the Hook 5 ships with a battery (only) cable. Apparently many people simple cut off the NMEA portion of the cable that comes with the Elite 5 Chirp.

I don't know if there are any other differences between the two.

I just did an Elite 5 Chirp install on my 2015 Outback about a month ago.

I clipped the NMEA as AlexB mentioned.

Both cables (power and transducer) fit through a single port, using the two hole insert.

Do note that it is a tight fit to get the blue plastic nut through the "wingnut" portion of the port assembly, but its easy enough.

Thanks, Snakecharmer. The "blue nut" being on the end of the transducer cable?

I've read about some people having to shave it down and others having no issues at all. Interesting.

Yes, that nut.  Actually, there is one on each cable.  And it is just small enough to fit through the port assembly wingnut if you force it. It damages the threads on the wingnut a tad, but not enough to make it not function as intended.

It gets difficult when you have to put two blue nuts through the same wingnut!  In fact, it doesn't work. You do it only with the transducer cable.  The power cable, even though it has an identical blue nut only has wires at the other end, so you thread the wires through, instead of the nut.

I might have learned this the hard way.

No worries.  Happy to actually be able to answer a question, instead of always being the one asking!

I just read your initial post.

I bought the Hobie kit and it worked great for the Elite 5 Chirp, which I understand is the same thing as the new Hook 5.  (on a 2015 Outback)

One more Q if you don't mind... How easy is it to slide the cords in or out of these fittings once installed? Is it easy to shove the loose cable back into the hull when you pull the head unit off at the end of the day?

If you are talking about the Hobie wiring thru hulls, if you choose the right rubber insert it is not easy to slide the cables based on my experience.

Good to know. So I guess I need to come up with some kind of bungee or clip to keep the loose cables from flopping around during transit. Should be easy enough.

Thanks.

FFTC is right, they don;t slide well once they are in.

On my outback, the Cable Fitting is inside the map pocket, so I just stuff the extra cable in there during transport.  I transport upside down on a roof rack, and they stay in the pocket even at 70mph.

+1

I use them for both FF cables and a camelback tube, and neither will slide easily thru the fitting. I consider that a good thing, since it's likely more waterproof that way.
