Striper Love At Salmon Creek (non-yak)

Here's my report from PF.com.

Hit Salmon Creek Tuesday after work for some afternoon grubbin'. Fished from about 3:30PM 'til about 6:00PM, during the middle of a moderate outgoing tide. It was fairly dark out due to the rainclouds so I started off throwin' a 1.5" Kalin's Perch Power grub Carolina rigged with two 1/2 ounce egg sinkers and a size 4 Gama mosquito hook. I started right at the entrance to the beach and worked my way south, just slowly walking and casting. After about a dozen casts I got some bites. I could tell they were walleye nibbles, but still, it felt good to know there were fish in the area. A few more casts and a few nibbles later I lost the tail on my only Perch Power grub. I had noticed the water was very clear so I switched to a 1.5" Kalin's Amber Hologram and rubbed it down with some sardine Smelly Jelly. First cast got slammed, but I swung for the fences and missed it. Damn…it has been too long since I've been grubbing and instinct took over. I should've known better that the mosquito hooks (to me anyway) seem kinda like circle hooks in the sense that I get more hook-ups when I just reel in fast instead of trying to "set" the hook.

Long story short - I ended up landing four walleyes from 6" - 9", two 10" redtails, and a 13" striper! All on the AH grub. The striper sure was a surprise and I thought it was a monster redtail. My first surf striper! All fish released.

Nice catch.Sometimes the pressure change of a incoming storm can really turn on a bite.I hope we see some stripers in the surf in the Monterey Bay this year.

There have been a LOT of reports of stripers in Monterey Bay over the past 3 weeks. Its just incredible! Especially considering the time of year and location. They are caught occasionally from May-September, which is the best time of year to catch them.
But these recent reports make me think that there is a local population of stripers here. I have heard (and perpetuated the rumor) that they are attracted to the Salinas and Pajaro Rivers; not clear on whether they actually spawn in there or if they just take advantage of the available forage there.
Most of the reports have been of schoolie-sized stripers but there were also two fish over 24 inches caught. And all of these fish have been caught on grubs by perch fishermen...makes me wonder how successful one might be if they used actual striper lures...hmmmm.


Sorry for hijacking your thread Hopper! I saw your post on PFIC too and think thats an awesome report! Any time you can catch redtails and a striper is a great day. Seems like we frequent the same fishing websites.

Nice report Dustin!! I bet the adrenaline was flowin with that striper! I still have yet to "lay into" a perch frenzy.They come into the bay and collect around rocks and pilings.
