The idea is if somehow the trap is lost with big crabs inside, the cotton strings that tied to the 5" escape ring (allow smaller crabs to escape) will rot and the ring falls off so the big crabs can get out.  Otherwise they can't get out and all died.

Thanks Sonny!

Not just that, but a derelict pot can keep fishing for years and years, killing the entire time.

Can't really tell from the pics jim but your buddy's escape rings are likely welded to the frame or woven into place with the stainless wire.

Sonny's pics are the right way for a Danielson, your buddy's commercial style pots will likely need to be rigged like this one....if not already.

Yep!

I don't think he has the bungee set up like that though...I will show him how it needs to be.

Thanks again guys!

I'd think that would be the whole point. It seems like any crabs initially trapped would be dead long before the cotton completely rotted, no matter how rotten the cotton...

Exactly. And the dead crabs become crab bait, so the derelict pot keeps on fishing indefinitely...

Damn, I just bought 2 new Promars collaspible TR-102Ws to replace my weathered ones. They work great but not sure how I'm going to make this adjustment.

Any suggestions? Should I just return them?

couldnt you just cut the welds on the escape rings and reattach with "rotten cotton"?

There's no welds they are tied on by the netting. Doesn't it have to be a larger opening than the escape rings anyway for the keeper crabs to escape?

Screw it, return em and use the rings. More fun anyway. Should be interesting to see Doran a week before the opener. I bet there will still be a 100 pots in and around the jetty

I have the promar net traps also I am thinking of cutting a ring of 6" OD ss tube 1/4" long and tiring it into the netting with permananent zip ties, wire, cord ect and cutting out the netting inside that ring. Then make a smaller hatch  about 5" 0d that will sit inside the 6" ring. Two zip ties about 2-3" apart between the rings to act as a hinge and tied with the cotton string on the other side.

I am curious if this is even necessary. What if I toss the clips away the hold the trap shut and just tie with string instead. Super easy just carry the twine with u, cut it when you pull the trap and tie with new string when deploying

Yeah I thought of that but that could be a bitch to constantly deal with.

Interested in seeing your hinged door.

So I'm guessing that my promar 102 collapisable traps will need to be modified to have a five inch escape hatch in the top tied up with cotton string?

Mine too.

I wish thery would have specified hoop traps. I would think they are exempted, but you never know with them.

"hoop trap" is not used in the regs.  They use "hoop net".  The reg is only about traps.

They did a good job making the regs clear in this case. No worries about my hoop nets.
