Not surprising.

I had a $25 gift certificate to SA last year and finally decided to pull the trigger on an Ugly Stik spinning rod for surf fishing. Took advantage of a sale so the rod with shipping was $45 out the door. Minus the gift card, I got the rod for $20 ... awesome.

Two weeks go and I'm thinking, "where the hell is that rod ?" I check the tracking number and it looks like its just stalled in the mail somewhere in the midwest. I call SA and they said that they had contacted the carrier to return the parcel because they had oversold the product and need the inventory to fill a previous order. The system never should have even allowed me to place the order, much less ever shipped the order out. They said they'd reinstate the gift card, refund the money, and offer me 10% off my next order for my trouble.

The rod showed up on my doorstep about two days later. Trying to do the honest thing, I tried contacting them on two occasions afterwards to sort it out and never received a return call.

Needless to say, giving away free inventory like that, this news doesn't shock me.

sad to hear that people will lose there jobs. but i had nothing but bad service the few times i shopped there. One time i went to buy a fishing license and i asked one of the associate where i could get it they directed me to the back and  i waited about 15min before anybody responded to me and when some one asked me if they could help me i said i like to buy a fishing license...that person said Oh, you have to go to the front to buy it. so, i got to the front and waited another long 15min. just for them to tell me to go to the back cashier where i was directed the first time and to find out they didn't  have any to sell. what a big wast of time and i never shopped there  again. Not surprise there closing some of their doors!

Has anyone seen the store closure list yet?  I can't find one.  The Eureka store just opened within the last couple years.  I don't think it does well.

I have had some pretty terrible service at SA as well, but I did have a great experience with helpful and knowledgeable staff at the Medford Oregon store last month.

I got a nice gaff for $5 at a local SA. It listed for $25, was marked down to $10, and it rang up as $5. I didn't complain.

You could see that coming from 100 miles away.  They built one here in Eureka.  I went once and could not see how that store could survive.  They didn't have shit.

They have good deals on online stuff sometimes...but they also have inventory control issues. Twice I've purchased an item and they neglected to inform me my order was cancelled retroactively.
The SA in Seaside/Monterey doesn't even carry fishing tackle!! Who made that decision? It was doomed from the start [setup shop inside an abandoned bldg that was previously occupied by Circuit City and I think Staples LOL]

The one in gilroy took out fishing over a year ago.  Any business that goes into a former Circuit City is doomed

They removed all the fishing gear from my local store too.  Might go by and get some camping chairs or work out clothes though...

Weak. I love hitting the clearance racks there.

I was just there two weeks ago stocking up on all kinds of poly-blend shirts for kayak fishing. Got like $300 worth of shirts for $80.

I'm going to stop by there today and see what's good.  I was bummed when the SA in our area removed their fishing dept.
