Are Threshers all year in La Jolla???   Looks like this would be a problem with my outback.  How much are the raffel tickets for Sean's malibu ?????...................Danglin

Those guys in that video are experienced at landing big fish and sharks.

Danglin... a thresher that big might be possible in your Hobie Outback, but you'll be paddling back... not pedaling.

When mounting new fishfinders, gps and rod holders, we all need to consider where and how to secure a big fish.

Its really not that much fun catchin threshers...   I wish i would of had a floatilla around me for mine. I woulda had Mooch carry my shark for me.   Then I could of kept trollin for salmon.  JTF..

funny you mentioned that.... a few years ago, I was out in Linda Mar with Mike /Sturgy (after work). We were both "trooching" for salmon and he hooked up with a thresher (not quite as big as yours) but I remember him fighting this shark for almost an hour....why nearly an hour? Well, he was using a barbless circle hook on 12# mono  

Of course, this left me in the position of "shark wrangler"   Well, after several failed attemps on grabbing the tail,
the shark was finally played out and was partially belly up. I got hold of the tail and waited to see if it would come back to life. Well, it was evident that Mike did a great job playing out the t-shark cause it had no life left in it. I simply pulled in the shark slowly until I got a clear shot with the "fish-be-cool-stick"  . We both paddled in while the sun was setting and I remember those big black eyeballs staring at me....kinda freaky  

Cool video... definitely a challenge.  I'd love to do that some day.  

I wonder if those So-Cal guys will ever adopt snares like we use for sturgeon.  Might make handling and controlling one of those big boys a bit easier.  Also, I think we need to send them a couple of the "punishers"... they would certainly dispatch a big shark quicker than the "stick and bleed" method.

Another thing I notice is that they really like to load the gear on their yaks...  One guy in that video had like 5 rods with him.  I prefer to keep my deck a lot less crowded than that.

This is why I like my cockpit kept clean and clear of anything and is why I chose to mount my FF off to one side, outside of the cockpit.  On my old kayak, my FF took a beating many times from big lings, sturgeon, and halibut where it was originally mounted in the center.

EK - I've noticed that too - then again, these guys don't really have to deal with the surf landings that we (in Nor Cal)  have to deal with 

I learned the ropes of kayak fishing off that beach a few years back, and have seen as many as seven rods on a kayak at a time!

Maybe I only speak for myself, but I've taken it way harder at La Jolla than off the beaches I've fished off in Nor Cal. On more occasions than I can count on one hand, I've spent serious time outside the crashing waves, watching swells, timing sets,- still, only to get swallowed up and destroyed in waist deep water. It got to the point where I would cram any loose articles into the hatch of my T140 before I came anywhere near the shore.

I've also flipped the kayak at Capitola and even Davenport (which is usually a cakewalk), but neither resulted in the sandy yard sales of SD.
That could change at Bean Hollow for the rock opener!

these little black eyeballs?  This pic is the only net shot I have, the tail was wrapped around me as I was getting ready to heave the shark up on my deck.  I had removed the hook and tangle from the shark outside the yak.  On the paddle back I kept the shark in a half circle in my big net under my legs.  I was so nervous...  The first shark in that other report I probabley would have cut the line if by myself, that thing was heeuge!

I can't believe you were able to snap off a shot during that melee.

As for those big doe-eyed Threshers.... I don't what it is..... but that face makes me feel sorry for them.  Damn.... I must be getting soft in my old age.
