Shelter Cove Salmon Opener - 2/17

I am not sure if it is a total high jack as we are still discussing Shelter Cover and early salmon.

I need to check the kids basketball schedule but I believe that the first weekend in March may be a bye week.  I can fit a couple of yaks on my minivan so I can drive.  I will check with my better half and get back to you.  If I schedule ahead of time, I will be committed.

Congratuations on the boy!  While I am happy with a girl, I have not been successful in turing her into a tom boy or fishergirl, yet.  Although she does now have a goldfish.  That king in your photo is a beast.

Abking, the wheels are turning.  Pat and I will try to work out a weekend trip to join you for some early season fun.

PK:  Congrats on the future yak-man!  And thanks for posting your old avatar in full size - the colors on that king are unreal!     I sense no thread-jack here...  May the force of good communication be with you~

I'll be stoked to hook up with the hackysackyakker and you, sinful one, should you guys make it up in March - you can count on me for some scouting reports between the opener and any trip you make. 

The launch is concrete with ribbing molded in, and a launcher ends up in hard-pack sand at minus tide.  The Corps of Engineers may be doing some improvements to the breakwater in the near future.  I love launching at the Cove because it's a breeze, right next to easy parking, and not far to the pay-off zone.  God I can't wait!   

PK, the first weekend in March is sounding good.  I'll send you a PM.  We should have two good weeks of reports by then.  Let's hope for good weather and we will see you there Abking.

There's a swell forecast of 12-13' for opening weekend - I'm kinda relieved because it turns out that Tahoe-trip/wife's birthday combo of events would've completely prevented fishing this weekend!   I found no WAF strong enough for that situation.    I hope to return from Tahoe by Wednesday and fish one or two days between Thurs and the weekend if there's some water and wind that will allow it.  Hopefully I can go before the weekend and report back if there's any action at all.

Here's another Cove launch shot - just to educate and entice!   

2ft--20ft, it's all the same. I'll be out there at the opener bobbing and turning green. If it's too Gnar Gnar then I'll spend the weekend running rivers.

Troll a chovie just north and west of the bell buoy, Hawk - that's the hotspot!     More than 15 pulls or so and you'll be feeding the blues and blacks, but that's also where my dad and I caught almost all our salmon last year.  Two bags of chovies is a good thing to have... 

Thanks for tips Abking, I'm not sure how good my chances are going to be but I love bobbing around in the ocean. I'm gonna work all my gear and get it fine tuned for the season. I'm starting to book weekends for the spring kayaking surge up here but am leaving as much time as possible to get out to the cove when theres company.

Sin Coast and I are planning on heading up there the first weekend in March.  The plan is firming up and we are both WAF approved.  I will be looking for your reports.

Cool deal!   

I can't hardly wait until March!  I'm ordering the Scotty Manual downrigger and plan to install it on my Mini-X for this trip. Hope the package will arrive by next week.  Any advises/suggestions are welcome 

Well it looks to be pretty rough for the next 5-6 days and I'm leaving for Tahoe tomorrow.  I'll check in by the middle of next week.  Hopefully if Hawk goes he'll have a report for us.

Sonny - a downrigger is a great thing to have but I don't think you'll need it at the Cove.

I'm out for a few days~
