Shelter Cove Salmon Opener - 2/17

I'm scheduled to leave town for Tahoe that day, but if the ocean's flat I'll be begging my wife to postpone.  I'll be off work through the 25th, so if it's flat later in the week (after coming back from Tahoe) then it's on!   

So what date are you talking Eric?

Cool picture.  Where was it taken? The reason I ask is because I thought that there was only one beach in CA, somewhere down south, where you can drive onto the beach.  Are there others?

Please note I've been known to be wrong once before so it wouldn't surprise me if I was wrong again.   

Thats no beach, that is a high tech HUMBOLDT county  (and Mendo.) marina and yacht club parking.

Whoops..that makes it twice now   I guess if I would have looked a bit closer I would have noticed that what looked like sand was actually cement.

The lost coast is famous for it's drivable beaches. You need a burly 4wd, winches, the whole bit to do it though. I'll be launching early from the cove opening day, paddling a green X-factor monitering 69

Saturday February 17th is the opener, Sean.  My wife's birthday is the 18th and our annual winter Tahoe run is a big event, so I'm kinda hoping it's rough until later in the week when we come home.  If I can fish Thursday, Friday and through the weekend / whenever it's flat enough on those days then I'll be happy.  That'll be 22nd - 25th.  I'm just getting excited to get on my yak in the ocean again - it's actually going to be best to wait if any of you will make a roadtrip because a trip to the Cove without the options of pulling an abalone (April 1st) or keeping rockfish (May 1st) is sort of a bust - especially when the salmon might not be biting on any given day... 

You can drive right onto the beach in a 2 wheel drive from that ramp in the photo - that's "Lost Coast Landing" at Shelter Cove. 

Sounds like I may see you on the 17th, Hawk.   

imgonnayak,  I don't know if its sand or concrete?  I know the ways of the southern humboldt and northern mendo folks.  They tend to make their own roads, laws, etc.  Kind of a shoot from the hip philosophy......

Guess I'll have to go up there to check it out...maybe then I'll avoid asking silly questions 

The picture above is the public marina in Shelter Cove.  And yes, it's concrete at the end of the ramp.

far is nothing, the road in is hell! Crank down on your straps tight and watch for Runaway RV's AND PB trailers. Carpooling is a good idea

Let me know if you ever want to carpool up there for a weekend salmon raid before the season opens down here.  I am not sure of my availablity but would be interested in working out a plan as I am not sure I can wait until April.

How about the wknd of March 2-4 or 9-11? Either of those wknds would work for me. (Although you might have to drive because I'm trying to sell my Z71  to get a more-suitable car for my pregnant better half. BTW: we found out yesterday that its a BOY!!!)
My parents even own some land up there so we could camp out for free. Its about 800 yds from the launch ramp so we could even Rolleez to the water and back if we felt like it! We begin building the vacation home in April! YAY!

I just realized that I totally hijacked this thread. Sorry Abking! I'm just excited about the prospect of an early salmon season. Good luck in late February if you manage to make it out! (I'm sure you will...hopefully you get another monster!)
