Hey Vince -

I was there last weekend fishing for king salmon (only caught one) but saw quite a few people shore fishing for bass. I launched from the spillway (dam area) and the people I saw catching bass were on the south side of the ramp anywhere from 50 - 250 yards from the launch ramp. They were using nightcrawlers under bobbers.

I'm not sure if Oroville has steelhead, but I know the Forebay and Afterbay areas do. They are leftovers from the ones planted in the Feather River that become landlocked for the most part. Apparently the Afterbay has good shore fishing but I've never tried. Good luck!

I have a number of a shop that has info on what's happening in the area and foray/afterbay. Fish Fins and Feathers  530-876-8800 ask for Chuck Giles. this may help. Good luck

Greg is right.  The steelhead are in the Afterbay.  I've never fished for them, but I've seen a lot of people fish from the shore around the Hwy 162 bridge.  As far as fishing Lake Oroville from the shore, I toss a wacky rigged Senko worm in Chartreuse or Rainbow trout colored and can usually find something to bite.  Good luck!

Mienboy- I'm far from a steelhead expert, but I've caught a few. Pick up a few Little Cleo spoons and/or Blue Fox spinners.

Cast them straight across the river, let them sink, then reel slowly - only fast enough to give it little action and keep it JUST off the bottom.

I have a friend who fishes the Feather for steelhead at least a few times a year.  He's done well both fishing flies under an indicator and drifting nightcrawlers on a typical steelhead drift rig.  Apparently the Feather gets a nice run of "spring steelhead" in March and April.  They're not huge (average around 15 inches), but they're bright and full of fight.

If you want more info, let me know and I'll hit him up.
