It might be, but I wouldn't eat it. Check the CDPH website:

http://www.cdph.ca.gov/Pages/NR16-007.aspx

They are saying to rinse out the body cavity before cooking. What I do is put the crab on its back, lay a knife over it along the midline between the claw tips, and give the knife a whack with a rock. Take the split crab and shake the insides out into a bucket and rinse. Then boil the halves as usual. I think you will find the body meat is sweeter if you cook them this way, as well.

my new name should be Ostridge. Got my head in the sand. Going fishing and letting go of the other stuff I can't control anyway!

i steamed mine without the shell yesterday and scooped all the guts out. my gf wouldn't eat them with them on because of the domoic acid scare. Steaming them with the shell on makes the crabs taste sooo much better. :smt010

The good news is that if you get amnesic shellfish poisoning from domoic acid, you won't ever know that it wasn't safe since your short term memory would be permanently impaired.

Seems like a win/win.

Ditto on the steaming. But i split and clean them first. I add butter , beer and a little water for steaming.

To me the butter is what makes me want to eat dungies! So, I'm going to wait till it's 100% safe before i go trapping for the crustaceans.

I steamed mine with the back. But I didnt eat the butter. Dont want to risk by eating it, they just taste better steaming with it. Add lemon on your boiling water.
