Have some fish carcasses for crab bait...Ling, rocky and cab...

Does anyone know if cabs are good to use for crab bait??

I have a memory in my head of hearing that they are NOT good for crab bait because they eat crabs and so crabs avoid them when they smell them...

Anybody have any insight?

Sincerely,

Jim

HOGWASH!

Crabs are scavengers and are probably cannabalistic.

Would'nt hurt to put some oily fish in a dispenser too to provide a scent slick.

I just think the fresher the bait the better the scent. As long as the bait hold scent (not rotten scent) the crabs will get to it.  Cabs will do just fine.

I concur. I used the cheap us rotten Salmon head and cant get a single Dungie, luckily I had a chicken on one of my traps.

Freezer burn trout works great for me!  But for sure I use any carcasses I have and then I also always add squid for more scent.

Squid really does seem to make a difference! I put COOKED chicken (kent fried Greasy) with squid and Canned sardines. Seems to work great!
my new name should be Ostridge. Got my head in the sand. Going fishing and letting go of the other stuff I can't control anyway!

IF it stinks, crabs will be attracted to it.  I remember Scott  GBW2 telling me he caught crabs on old Chow Fun!  :smt044

I've heard that before too and have never saved cab carcasses because of it.

I have some serious doubts that its true though.  It screams old fisherman's tale.

I bought a meat grinder at Hospice for $4 for the sole purpose of grinding guts and carcasses down to fit in the orange Scotty vented bait jars.
I don't think it would matter to the crabs at all what kind of meat it is.
In fact, they'd probably welcome a little pay back.  :smt044
