Looking at a FF for my new (to me) Outback. It doesn't have the Lowrance ready port, so I will be shooting through the hull.

I'm looking at the following FF as it has the options I think I need, and is a good price point for my budget.

http://www.westmarine.com/buy/lowrance--elite-4-hdi-chartplotter-fishfinder-with-83-200-455-800khz-transducer-nautic-pro-cartography--17030388#prPaContainer17030388

Would the included transducer work shooting through the hull using the duct seal / water bath method of mounting?

Anything else I need to take into account with this purchase?

That should work great.

You will need some fittings to pass the wires through your hull, and you'll need a battery (duh...).

Thanks Alex, The Outback already has the through hole fitting installed from the previous owner and I have the ammo box battery set up for my previous ride.

Sweet... Sounds like you're set!

Have you already tried the duct seal water bath method? That's how I've been running mine, but it does have an annoying drawback... If your yak sits upside down on the roof of your car and heats up in the sun, the duct seal will soften up and your transducer will fall out...

I'm interested to see how you get it setup there BMAC.  I just got a lowrance unit delivered the other day, waiting for some battery stuff to come this week and will be trying to get it setup.

I've been searching and it looks like I'll be trying the duct seal and see how it goes, my unit has the same transducer.  Maybe someone can chime in about shooting through hull will this specific ducer.

I'm on my phone so I can't get you a link, but I just got an Elite4 CHIRP with navionics+ for $254 on amazon. Combine that with the $50 mail in rebate lowrance is doing and you're getting a more modern unit for basically the same price.

I was in the same boat with BMAC and looking at the Elite-4 at West Marine for $200.  However, the search on Amazon for ELITE4 CHIRP with navionics turns up this for $326...

If a link for the Amazon one for $254 is available, I would greatly appreciate it.

Im trying to find it on my phone but missing it. I'll try to get back later on a computer. For now, here is the same model at $259+small ship fee. Still significantly cheaper

Ok I went back through my history and found they jacked the price of the one I got back up to $326. But the link I posted above is still $259.78 the model number is included on the lowrance $50MiR. So you're looking at about $215 shipped after rebate.

I installed mine shooting through the hull and had great results on the test this weekend. I could see my lure and even the barrel swivel on the leader while jigging 20FOW

Davey - What kind of seal does the Elite 4 Chirp have to keep water out of the SD card slot? My old Lowrance Mark 4 had a soft rubber flap/seal that didn't seem very waterproof. I ended up squirting some dielectric grease in there to help keep water out. Curious if they've updated or replaced the flimsy rubber flap for the newer models.

Negative on the update. Still using that same little floppy rubber....

I loaded my SD card in last night and had the same wtf thought process. Greasing it up is a good idea.

Yea Davey, I picked up the 5 chirp for  cheeeeep + rebate  too and like the next day back up to ~450... but for bmac, figure in that rebate on the chirp models, i think 25$ for the 4

So did yours come with the 83-200-455-855 transducer?  How did you mount the thru hull setup?  My buddy did a ghetto marine goop on his 4 he bought this summer but we could see the fricken weight and swivel easy... so dope!

now that i dropped my $ want the best poss xd setup.

Bummer...

I don't use an SD card in mine, so I just needed to seal it up really well. I ended up squirting the hole full of dielectric grease being VERY careful to avoid "over-schmear" (technical term...). Then I closed the little rubber flap and secured it in place with some Gorilla tape. It's held up surprisingly well, thanks in part to the lack of greasy over-schmear.

I saw the elite-5chirp going for like $330ish the day I ordered mine(if I recall correctly), but it didn't include maps which I really want. I also figured I'd get better battery life with the smaller screen and have more deck space. I was pretty torn on the 4 or 5, but am on a tight budget.

Yeah, it came with the 83-200-455-855 ducer. The model number is 000-11817-001. It definitely qualifies for the $50 MiR as per the model number listings on the Lowrance form.

As for mounting the ducer, I just marine siliconed it to a flat spot inside the hull. That's pretty much the instructions in the manual. I'm curious what this water contraption is that people are talking about? Maybe I missed something I was supposed to do. But like I said, I can see barrel swivels moving 20 ft down, so it seemed pretty good to me so far. I'll do more "testing" of it soon :D

Too cool right. Sounds like you've got a good install. Happy hunting and don't forget to use the insight genesis feature.
