Redundancy is where it's at.  Get two for yourself = my advice.

I've heard some of the most experienced guys on this board say "my VHF battery died" while on the water.  Of course it's happened to me too, and that's why I roll with at least two and often three VHF's while paddling offshore.

Think about it.

 :smt001

I've never run out on a full charge, only when I forgot to charge and try to get a quick charge from the cigarette charger on the way to the launch.

The more loquacious folks seem to run out of charge all the time, but a second radio would probably be an invitation to some to monitor as many channels as possible, so the chatty kathys should probably buy four...

I concur.Anything I add would be superfluous hyperbole . :smt002

This model doesn't have GPS or 1 button location capability.
Is the Horizon still the best low cost recommendation for having all those abilities?

No ... not the least expensive.  I agree!  Standard Horizon does have, typically, THE BEST rebates going almost all year and have a good quality product with good support - hence the reason they sell so many units.  I'd rate SH up there with ICOM in terms of good radios overall ... no offense to the Lowrance radio  :smt002

Only problem with that two-pack is they're only 2.5 watts. So they won't transmit very far. You want one that has 5W or 6W option. I see that SH HX150 is about $80 and does 5W.  My favorite vhf is a crappy Uniden MHS75...costs about $75.

having the safest/most efficient gear is important ..it goes without saying there are very good deals but dont purchase a safety item just because it's a good deal ..you pay peanuts you get monkeys..get the best deal you can for sure but don't sacrifice reliability to save a few bucks ..the few extra $$$ might save your life , good luck with your hunt  :smt001

What about Cobra units in general?  The MR HH475 and HH500 have a blue-tooth function that lets you answer your phone with the radio.  Seems kinda cool to protect the phone from water.
Fish laugh when I paddle by.  Sometimes they laugh so hard they fall on my hook.

I agree with Bill.  I personally use a Standard Horizon HX300 and love it. Has a 13 hrs battery life, floats, transmits 5/1 watts.
Comes with a $20 rebate.  I also own an ICOM M24 for back up / loaner.
Cheap is not the way to go.  Your life can depend on your VHF radio.

As soon as the weather clears, I'm going to hook up a little extra security for anglers at the cove.

Nelly has been doing it for years.  SHe's basically blind from what I understand but she's super sweet to all of the fishermen and loves to chat everyone up on 68.  Hopefully she can keep it up for years to come.

Since we're on this topic, on a scale of 1-10, how worth it is GPS your VHF? I notice the vast majority do not include GPS, and units like the HX870 do. I have a gift card for Gander Mountain, and it doesn't quite cover the HX870, but I'm thinking someone here can convince me the GPS is worth it to pay the extra.  :smt006
