With Crab/Perch Fest coming, I need to see what are some good perch outfit's. Post up you use, the pro's and con's. I have a 8.5 foot rod that I use for throwing lures for Stripers, but not sure that is the ideal outfit for perch.

Long but lightweight, and try to come up with a basic system to set the rod up as you wait for a bite.  Domenic came up with a good method which was a piece of rebar with a piece of PVC attached - drive the rebar into the sand and set the rod in the PVC.  Shrimp is a very common bait, and I've had luck with little chunks of lingcod from a carcass too.  If you can dig up some sandcrabs or locate some mudworms you're in business too.

Good luck and have fun!   :smt001

I've had good luck with perch in rocky pools with mussels as bait, too. Small hooks for little mouths . . .I just use my Trevala.

It's been a longtime since I perched from the beach, I used a 9' fast action, light-medium with a spinning reel.

Lamiglas X11 8ft. 6in. paired with a Shimano Saros 3000 size reel. lined with 20lb. Power pro. I use it for grubin' and for bait fishing. I have nothing but good things to say about it.

I should have mentioned that I will be using grubs most of the time.
Reelfish, do you or can you use that rig for stripers?

almost any rod will do, you just need to cast out past the first break; if you are in "shin high waters" your in perch country...

8'-10' fast (med fast) bait casting rod are my go to; that, coupled with a calcutta TE and youre in business!!!

I think if I buy a dedicated surf rod I would go for an Okuma t40x spinning rod. 10'9" long, medium action 8-17 lb line 3/8-1.5 oz weight. It's actually a salmon/steelhead float rod. I've been using a similar rod in 8.5 ft length, but sometimes I wish for the extra length to cast a bit further.

Oh, combine that with a 4000 series spinning reel, 20lb braid, and an 8lb leader.

i use a okuma light steelhead/salmon spinning rod 8'6" med action paired with a basic shimano 4000 reel.  nice balanced setup for throwing curly tail grubs for perch.  you don't want something heavy to cast all day with.  if you have a "noodle" trout rod already, start with that.

I agree with the guy from the mailroom.

I use an old 8'6" Penn (Sabre maybe?) with a Shimano Curado baitcast reel.

Whatever you get, make sure it's light. You could potentially be making hundreds of casts in a few hours.

You don't need to cast that far for perch. I almost always launch my offering way out there, just because it's fun when you catch the occasional perch out that far, but the reality is that the vast majority of your hits are going to come very close to shore.

You bet ya. Haven't caught one on that rod yet but it will do the job.
