Lost Coast Polin' and Pokin'

I can't bring myself to go Steelheading on the Eel even though I really want a trout for my AOY entry--I'm addicted to the ocean!   

Took the fam over yesterday hoping for decent temps and light wind.  Instead we got 48 degrees and 10 knot winds - snow gear at the beach!  Built a fire and BBQ'd a chunk of tri-tip and skipped fishing.  So I went back today solo and dipped a line for a bit right after the minus tide.  Had a decent cab on quick, and the water was pretty clear so I left my hooks in about 2 feet of water and got in and dove the area with my pole spear.  I punched a hole in a big urchin and searched around enjoying the good vis of 3-4'.  Came back to the urchin periodically and spent a total of around 30 minutes chasing a white-spotted greenling that I never did get a good shot at.  The perch were schooling big time as usual, but I've never been too crazy about them.  At one point a big female kelp greenling came into the urchin feed and I took a sling-shot at her, but I missed and she bailed out of there.  I went back over to my hooks and found that the cab had returned and was sitting there with my squid in its mouth.  I speared it and was pleased that my underwater judgment was true - 18".  Went back and chased the white-spotted sea trout for a while longer.  It was going around and around this truck sized rock and would lay down in a hole with these 4 legal abs - would've been a cool pic.  I'm farming those abs for future easy-grabs when conditions are crappy and I want a dinner.  Cruised around for a bit and spotted an olive in a hole - it sat there obligingly while I backed out and came back down and popped it Hawaiian style.  It felt so good to get in the water.  I can't wait for ab and rockfish (yak) seasons...   

That's some beautiful coastline! Great job braving the cold for a tasty catch.

You swam up to a fish with your hook in it's mouth and speared it?  Cooool.  There should be a name invented for that move.  Something along the lines of the old "belt and suspenders trick".  I don't dive . . but if I did I would totally do that.

abking you've got the life  We used to do usall and wolf creek up there before the lost coast was found My friend's dad had a commercial smelt fishery at wolf creek using A-frame nets
