Contacted a local tree service Richards tree service, to look at removing 3 tall tan oaks in my yard  All three trees were leaning in towards my house from 3 different places. Each had HUGE "Widow makers"  hanging over my house.  These trees have been a big concern of mine for a few years now.
When I called Richard for an estimate we agreed on Sunday morning at 08:30  and he was at my door at 08:30 Sunday morning!
His 3 man crew arrived today at the appointed time, and safely and methodically removed the 3 trees!  It was raining, but that didn't deter them from completing the job.  Pricing was very reasonable. Overall I'm happy with his service!
So, I now have about another cord of oak to split up come summer!

Typically I would, but this was quick decision, had to be done asap. With widow makers over house I needed them gone before next series of storms hit.

That reminds me to trim the branches of the Chinese pistachio tree out front, hopefully to slow the rate of the roots pushing up the sidewalk. The city no longer maintains the trees it plants but (surprise, surprise) wants homeowners to take out permits to trim the trees...which I'm not doing.

got them down just in time I think! Good to know Richard's is a good outfit.

Davey is felling 3 big trees at my house in the next month. Two dead madrones and a one-sided tan oak. I hate to see trees removed but vegetation management does occasionally dictate felling. I'll put in some replacements in the spring.

The felling is going on PG&Es dime, but I've got my spring project in turning them into cordwood.

on the bright side, we'll have more sun and next years heat stacked by fall.

If you (or anybody else on here) can take down a 120' Douglas fir that's 3' from my kitchen window, and on a hillside to boot, let me know...

I comfortable using my chainsaw, have the safety bib, helmet/ear muff combo   and have removed 3 other tan oaks myself.  I know my limitations. 120' fur is way outside my limits.

Careful with Davey... had a bad experience with their inexperienced crew, took out part of our fence while they were removing trees up on Hwy 9.  Then it took a week of calling them to get it fixed.  They did fix it though.

I've got a GIANT pine tree in our yard that scares me quite a bit.  Some of the dead limbs are 8" around and 15' long and two have fallen since we lived here.  But it's soooo big I'm afraid to ask how much it would cost to fell.

For a basic crew to fell it, plan on $1500+.  A crew with insurance, 1.5x that.

for sure, I would NEVER have Davy tree do any work if I had to pay them. Terrible reputation, plus they aren't even arborists.  One of the dead trees they want to fell was killed by them in the time we've lived in the house. We watched get hacked on year after year until the whole thing finally died. This is a 80ft madrone so kind of sad.
But Davy are PG&Es only contractor , and the quote I got for just one of the trees they'll be dropping from my regular tree guy was $1200 for just that one tree so....at least the foreman guy has been cool so far.

I had a co-worker with a similar tree to Nowhereman's. Easily a 100ft+ doug fir, same distance from the house. Really spooky. It took the tree crew 3 jobs to fell it over several months, and it cost something like $4000 in total due to it being in a tight neighborhood and necessitating a huge crane to drop the pieces.

You're probably correct. The lowest estimate I've had was $4k, and that guy kept telling me (over and over and over...) about all of the pot he smoked when he was in high school.

Is there anyone within 120 feet of the tree behind you? If not, chop away and let it fall away from the house.
