I have tried kayaking local lake a couple times this year thinking I would get the first fish but no luck so tried the Sacrament River today before level comes up and turns muddy from rains expected this week.

Took two rods with me, one had orange glo bug and a trailing fly second set up with blue/silver kastmaster. It was raining so couldn't really tell how active river was until I waded out, flow is so low can walk about half way across. Started with the glo bug but as soon as I got out saw small silver minnows jumping everywhere, some kind of fly hatch happening I did try the glo bug three or four times since I was already there with no hits, went back to shore grabbed the rod with kastmaster thinking there was bigger fish underneath and was right.  Let the kastmaster bounce on bottom, gave reel a couple turns and bounce again. Seemed to always get strikes at about 45 degree angle to flow.

Caught four in little over an hour, missed two or three more #1 pic is first fish of 2016, second pic is largest I caught. Nothing like fishing in the rain.

Lower Sac up near Redding I assume?  The second fish looks like what would come out of Putah this time of the year.

Love the coloration of that top fish. Looks like one of the ones you'll get in the little streams in the mountains that eventually make it to the sac.

Beautiful bright fish!  Way to start 2016!
Fish laugh when I paddle by.  Sometimes they laugh so hard they fall on my hook.

When I first saw the color  thought it might be a hatchery fish, but no fin clip, makes sense they are coming out of the creeks. I have fished the river well over 100 times in the last 18 months and have never seen it as active as it was yesterday. Fish boiling everywhere, small birds either wrens or starlings chasing whatever fly hatch was floating down the river lasted maybe 45 minutes and done.
