A good quality HH VHF is a must; kind of like a PFD & immersion gear (dress for the conditions).

If you rn into questions about FF & GPS stuff, feel free to drop me a message.

Welcome to the group!

You might want to invest in a crane to lift it (cheaper than hernia surgery).

Just kidding, but you do want to think about how you'll deal with it on dry land.
I don't like stuff that sucks.

Before you head out into the salt for the first time go with someone with some experience.

Also if you have a chance, go to a lake, pool about chest high flip your yak over and learn how to flip it back over
My biggest worry is that my wife(when I'm dead)will sell my fishing gear for what I said I paid for it

Don't do this "if you have a chance", just do it. The ocean is a harsh mistress; no amount of "I shoulda have"s and "if I'd only"s will get you out of a sticky situation, but taking a bit of time to practice self rescue  will.

Better yet, go to a spot with water over your head and practice flipping your kayak over, turning it back upright, and climbing back onto it.  If you flip, it probably won't be in chest deep water.  If you want to practice by yourself, find a dock with a ladder running up out of the water, and tie your kayak to the ladder with 20-30 feet of rope.  Then if you have trouble either righting your kayak or climbing back onto it, you can swim over to the ladder and pull the kayak over to you.

And Seabird is right: don't just practice getting back onto your kayak "if you have a chance."  Make practicing a priority, practice soon, and practice regularly.  Work on it until you can flip your kayak upright and climb back onto it in under 20 seconds.  Wear your PFD and the other gear which you wear while kayak fishing.  If you wear waders rather than a full dry suit while kayak fishing, definitely practice while wearing the waders, so you find out how well (or not so well) they work in a safe situation with friends next to you to help if necessary.

Most of the popular ocean fishing species are closed until sometime in May, so you won't see a lot of people going out in the ocean until then. Typically if you keep an eye out in our hookup section of the forum you will find opportunities to meet up with people and fish.

Always looking for new people to fish with!
