Ok... So you don't want universal background checks and you don't want to inquire about people's mental health before they purchase a gun...

What do you recommend? Do nothing?

Doing nothing is better than all of the alternatives that have been presented so far.  Instant universal background checks to CLETS and NCIS are fine.  Everything else is just for show and will only inconvenience people without actually having any effect on gun violence whatsoever.

That just your opinion, man... (The Dude)

Jesus man, you set that up on a silver platter and I can't bring myself to take the super obvious Shut the Fuck Up Donny shot.

I must be getting soft in my old age.

Pretty much... For some dumb reason Americans choose to ignore actual facts and statistics, and instead grasp onto anecdotal evidence like their lives depended on it. They actually CHOOSE to live in fear. Scared someone from a different part of the world is going to attack them... Scared someone who's skin is a different color is going to attack them... Scared someone with a different religion is going to attack them... Scared someone is going to take their guns away... Scared they might not be able to buy any more big ol' assault rifles to pacify them and fend off whatever it happens to be that scares them, so they all run off to buy MORE GUNS...

All I can say is I'm glad I don't live like that. Sounds exhausting...

"Scared someone in another part of the world is going to attack them"... Yeah, thank God that doesn't happen... Pearl Harbor, 9/11, San Bernadino... Oh, wait.

It's important to keep things in perspective.

1.4 million Americans have died in all wars since 1776 (adding terrorism doesn't even move the needle).

Meanwhile, 1.4 million Americans have died via household guns since 1968.

What is important about that?  What perspective does that provide?  Are we just supposed to look at some really big numbers that Neil deGrasse Tyson posted on twitter and think "wow, those are really big numbers".  Or are we supposed to be appalled and motivated to do a bunch of ineffective things to make ourselves feel better?

The numbers are also wrong.  Its 1.2 million war dead and 1.4 million household firearm dead (about half of which are suicides).  So its even more slanted in favor of "holy crap that's appalling let's do something ineffective to make ourselves feel better".

Grim Reefer started throwing out things like Pearl Harbor, 9/11, etc in response to my statement that Americans are scared. My post provides perspective on how tiny those numbers are in comparison to the actual gun death toll here in America.

I'm tired of all the responses that say gun control is ineffective then fail to provide any suggested alternatives.

You really think we, as a country, should just sit back and watch? Do nothing?

So you say gun control is ineffective. And you say it would violate our rights if medical records were made available... So now what?

The only thing I'm sure of is all of this arguing back and forth will definitely change minds one way or another, such that gun control enthusiasts will agree gun control is ridiculous, or gun totin' crazies will decide that restrictive gun control is the only way to go.  Someone will definitively win the argument.

Dammit, don't go pouring water on us....we are just getting started!!!!   LOL

just curious answer, dont answer.. Not including combat Veterans  how many of you or us, have been shot at..

I`ll start  twice  1. 2 shots fired in my direction ( not at me specifically ) at a party growing up in Richmond/handgun
                       2. 3 shots fired in my direction ( not at me specifically) by a drunk, which I was pelted with BB`s / shotgun

I know I need to watch where I stand or rethink my situations   :smt002

Once.  Someone at a lake indiscriminately squeezing off rounds from a road toward the lake.  At least 20 in total.  I was on shore and took cover behind a rock.  No way they saw me or knew I was there so I'm not sure it counts.

Not exactly do nothing.  If someone is shooting at you, I encourage you to shoot back.

I suggest we start with universal background checks on all gun purchases. Then we can start ACTUALLY studying gun violence  (let the CDC do their job).

How about annual physical and mental exams, plus safety courses? Or maybe every other year?
This sort of protocol would likely weed out non law-abiding gun enthusiasts as well as weed out those who don't know how or aren't able to operate a gun safely.
May the fish be mighty and the seas be meek...

Where I live, I hear gunshots just about very night. And there is no hunting in Oakland... I can only assume it's a combination of actual crimes being committed and trigger-happy gun enthusiasts playing with the new toys they got for Christmas. Whatever it is, it's annoying at best...

I have absolutely no issue with responsible gun owners, and no issue with people hunting in a responsible manner. If universal background checks would prevent even one of these nighttime gunshots, I'd call it a win.

I support the waiting period 100%. It gives people who may have bad ideas a chance to cool their hot heads and reassess.

Sooooooooo, just how many of those gun shots during the night do you think are caused by "RESPONSIBLE" gun owners.    Here is your answer, but it's just a guess....0.   In fact, I would be willing to bet that none of your nightly gunshots are even done by legally owned firearms.  Gun control is not going to make Oakland safer....come on man.... you're killing me.

Alex...I would support that if you can define what the criteria on the background checks are/ is and have it approved by vote..note by a senate / house or congress..by true democratic process 1 person /1 vote

True democratic process does not exist in America. So that ain't gonna happen.

As for what should be included in the background check, how about we take one step at a time... Let's start by actually implementing the same background check we already have 100% of the time.
