Facts and statistics.  Wow, those sound scary too.  Maybe we should ban those.

What's funny is gun control seems to work everywhere else in the world thats actually done it...

Pretty much... For some dumb reason Americans choose to ignore actual facts and statistics, and instead grasp onto anecdotal evidence like their lives depended on it. They actually CHOOSE to live in fear. Scared someone from a different part of the world is going to attack them... Scared someone who's skin is a different color is going to attack them... Scared someone with a different religion is going to attack them... Scared someone is going to take their guns away... Scared they might not be able to buy any more big ol' assault rifles to pacify them and fend off whatever it happens to be that scares them, so they all run off to buy MORE GUNS...

All I can say is I'm glad I don't live like that. Sounds exhausting...
The beauty of it is, when you have guns there's nothing to be afraid of. I live in a place where almost everyone owns a firearm and we have virtually no violent crime. How's that for facts and statistics

The sad part is, we already DO ban facts and statistics by preventing government, scientists, and human health professionals  from tracking and studying gun ownership and gun-related violence.

I recommend you read up on the differences between facts, statistics, and anecdotal evidence.

I recommend that you actually spell out the facts, statistics, and anecdotal evidence that you are referring to, rather than expecting us all to take your word for it.

You actually have the nerve to post this?

BTW - pretty sure you just alienated yourself from just about every gun owner on this site with that brilliant break-down of American gun owners.

I stated a fact. States that have more legal gun ownership and less gun control tend to have less violent crime

Is that a fact?  Does that make him a statistic?

See, they are scary, lets just ban them and no one will have or use them ever again.

Whew, that was easy.

What they don't get is that criminals don't buy firearms
legally. They buy them from other criminals. Stopping lawful citizens from purchasing isn't going to stop criminals and the black market. If anything, it will create a larger black market and increase in  smuggling and the gang wars that come with it.
Once again, look at prohibition and all crime / murder related to smuggling and territorial disputes.

More people are killed by fists and feet each year than by rifles. Ban fists and feet!

Should everyone who wants a gun be able to have one and if not what laws are needed to prevent unrestricted gun ownership? I've owned guns from a very early age but parental safety training was intense and lapses in judgement of gun use had real consequences. There are rural pockets in America where that is still the case but not nation wide. There are about 32,000 deaths a year from guns, about the same as automotive deaths. If car ownership did not require registration, licence, insurance, safety features like seat belts the risk of driving would be far higher. Given that there are around 300 million guns in this country it would take a massive buy back such as Australia did after the Port Authur massacre to reduce the supply and then more stringent rules on ownership before a difference would be made. Right now gun deaths seem to be an acceptable cost of the firearm business in America. The best book I've read on the subject is Adam Winklers GUNFIGHT which is a historical review from colonial times to present on the role of guns in this nation. It is not a pro or con view on guns but a lucid well documented history of the role of guns in our country. Well worth the read.

I just don't understand the leap from "more extensive background checking" (which I support) and "a complete ban on firearms".

Yes, there is a black market where criminals buy and sell guns. BUT, where did every single last one of those guns come from? They were all legally purchased at some point before they entered the black market. Maybe the original owner sold it on Craigslist (no background check)? Brought it to a gun show or swap meet (no background check)? Gave it to their friend/relative/neighbor/son/daughter (no background check)? Used it to commit a crime then ditched it in some ally to be found by whoever (no background check). Maybe it was stolen from their house? Or, maybe the first guy who bought it scratched off the serial and sold it to his buddy who has an axe to grind...

So I take it the point you're trying to make is that passing legislation to make it more difficult to buy a gun legally will make it more difficult to buy a gun illegally?  :smt044
