I'll throw a little more wood on the fire for an Almanor run.  This is from ten days ago.  They'll be easy pickings at least into mid-January.  Three hours from Sac!

You realize if I show this to my kid, he is going to be expecting me to wake up at 3, drive up there, and fish till sunset. Dude...I am so tempted!!!! Will make a call by tomorrow. Are you fishing this lake at all soon?

Just sent a reply.  I'll be out of town these next few days, but let's try to hook up when I return!

Are you interested in having company along on the trip?  I've been looking to drive up that way with my camper and kayak.  I'm not bother.... usually... :smt044  The camper makes it easy to change clothes, have hot coffee, chocolate, etc.

Hi Jerry, I will send you an IM when we have a date we are going to head up there. Right now, they have lots of snow coming in. We are going to target the week after Christmas. My kiddo is pretty stoked to go up there... Would love to have a warm place too :)

Quinn,
Believe it or not, you live next to some good brown trout water: Lake Natomas. The bottom is flat and covered with river rocks/cobblestones. It's perfect crawdad habitat, and there are lots of big crayfish in the lake. The browns are eating those. A buddy pulled an eight pounder out of there a number of years ago on a crawdad crankbait. I don't know where in the lake he caught it, but I saw the pictures. I would easily believe there are some toad smallmouth bass in there too. I haven't fished it in years, but remembering it, I'm thinking, "What have I been thinking?"
Another place for large browns used to be Salt Springs Reservoir. When there is snow on the ground, it can be an iffy drive, as the road from Buckhorn Lodge into there wasn't paved last time I went there, but when the water is low,  it's like fishing in a barrel. You can probably check with PG&E about the road and water conditions, as it's their lake. Good luck.
