Planning on heading out early tomorrow (wed 12/16) to fish the bay. Probably hit up cannery row if no one else goes, or try to find the shale beds out from the big hotel. Never had much luck out there, but now i have a FF and so maybe i can find some structure <><

Anyone interested or planning on going out?

Hey JayDex. A buddy and me are heading up to Mont Bay this morning.  Hope to see you out there, this will be my first time taking the yak out to the bay. Good luck!

good luck out there. I went out yesterday (wednesday) and fished around cannery row kelp beds. It was slow, but I caught a handful of rockfish; kept 3 and let one go that I'm pretty sure was pregnant. It was a nice time and the conditions were super mellow <*((((><

My sons and I are planning to go pot holing for rock fish in Monterey Bay between Christmas and New Years. Any advice on good spots? I know Lovers Point is accessable and has kelp beds worth potholing. Any other lucky spots worth trying? I see JayDex mentions Canary Row as well.
Thanks for any guidance you can provide.

Merry Christmas and safe Yaking.

Im not sure what pot holing is?

I believe January/new years is no more rock fishing from boat; season ends 31st.

I think he may have been talking about poke poling??   :smt044

And, rock fishing is open all year fishing from shore or diving.

Pretty sure pot holing refers to dropping a jig down through the "potholes" in the kelp.

Sorry guys. Yes, Jim is correct. I've heard potholing is the term for sitting on a kelp bed and dropping rock cod jigs down into the kelp.

Canary Row by the MB Aquarium seems like a nice spot, but not sure.

Thanks,
Ken

Went out with Casey on Thursday it was both our first times taking yaks in the ocean. I wiped out on the launch going out. Not knowing the area i input the off limits spot in the FF to stay away from them paddled out to the red bouy looking for structure not seeing much. Where we ran into another kayak fisherman who gave us some good pointers on where to fish. He even paddled over with us to show us. So if he is on here thank you again.  Ended up with about 7 fish apiece. A few blues, gophers, kelp,a brown and an olive, one short ling. We were hoping to find some fish then do some spearing. Good thing we didn't spear because we were in the H/L only area. But had a great time next time looking to go some where where we can spear.

Had a great time in MontBay Thursday with smilee.  I caught a wave and ended up flipping my yak on the way in. Center hatch came loose and dumped my cell phone in the drink, rookie mistake!  Still an outstanding day though, well worth it. Glad we met up with a guy who knew the area, cheers to him! Landed some quality rocks and learned a lot. Got a new phone and back up on the forum, looking forward to the next trip.
