Okay, who's going to be the smarty pants who posts a picture of their lifetime license with a cost of $0.00?  :smt044

That would be me, about another 6 or so years and it has paid for itself !!

Not unless I beat you to it.  I don't see a picture yet.  :smt003  :smt002

I purchased mine at the end of 2013 so 2016 will only be my 3rd year of using it but so glad to finally have one.  Took me 5-6 years to convince my wife who's an accountant.

Still a while until I break even.  :smt010

Gotta check my records. Purchased my lifetime license somewhere around 2001 ?  $ 500.00 . So, maybe closer to 10 yrs to break even.  :smt003

I will break even somewhere around age 62 or slightly sooner. So if I live to minimum 72. License probably around 50 bucks then. That is a minimum of 500 bucks.

I did the math.  Accounting for increases in cost, discount rates, reduction to present value of a future stream of income, and the actuarial chance of when I will die, I will never break even if I purchase a lifetime fishing license.

Now if they increase it by some ridiculous amount instead of the GDP deflator linked increases, it would be worth it - assuming that it was done in a way that was covered so that lifetime license holders didn't have to pay more.

It looks extremely worthwhile for a child under 10 to purchase one if there is even a 50/50 chance that he or she will live in California as an adult.

But...what if you purchased it for $490 fourteen years ago, at age 23?
$490 / 14yrs = $35 per year.
And now I'm basically fishing for free, for the rest of my life.

$490 14 years could be worth $600 taking inflation only. Or $900+ if invested in sp500. Still very cool purchase!
