and for anyone reading who has not put one on board---I waited 2 seasons and should not have
This cheap easy to use pump is my #1 Favorite purchase

there are so many important things to have if going into the ocean -but this is my latest favorite

I tie mine inside the hull to the bottom of my hatch handle...on 20" or so of 50 lb mono next to my shorty paddle
this allows me to use it while its still tied to the inside of the yak-then drop it back in and close hatch--quickly remove sloshing water from my fish n dives which seem to take on more than friends yaks over 6+hrs
the one in this listing is great product and removes lots of water fast -shooting it fully clear of the yak

I got them at West Marine. They look like these but were cheaper: http://www.westmarine.com/buy/orion--dye-marker--5367149
Only tried them once though, in my father inlaw's pool...

Your best whistle is a fox forty. It is used by safety professionals, and can be purchased at any white water store.

Vhf radio, knife clipped in front for easy access. Mirror, whistle, compass pliers.  Maybe ginger candy or gum for sea sickness. I don't keep any fishing gear because i dont take anything in or out of pockets even when i get home. That way i will always have those safety items on me.

VHF Radio with DSC, whistle, 2 chemical light sticks, orienteering compass w/mirror, emergency knife, mini multi-tool, flint and steel, AAA-sized LED flashlight, blaze orange bandana, extra set of nail clippers because I donate so many to DJL.

Something that you might want to at least consider is choosing red glow sticks and or red signal lights to help being spotted at night from the air.   Red lights show up brightest on NVGs. Sometimes the halos on red lights are twice as large as other colors.

good idea will do that

I also put our names and #'s on our yaks in clear sight, sharpie-will need to be touched up some times

after hearing of a yak and gear with no owner washing into shore this year with no i.d--save folks some hassle to have the owner and cell #...

I am one of those guys that will fill every pocket. However I try to keep my pfd boyancy in mind. Compass, knife, radio, extra pliers or forceps, sunscreen for my cheap Irish skin. First aid kit onboard, first aid kit has headlamp and glowsticks, flint and steel. I started keeping a quick attaching stringer hook setup(swivel, to mono to hook) incase anything bait size comes up in Ling country.  I just try to cover the bases. I may rely to heavy on Eagle Scout/Fireman/mountain boy/redneck ingenuity.
I label my gear with my DL number.
I am adding a storm whistle to the PFD
I only fish on days that end with Y
