While using a Scotty down rigger I found the wire humming was just a little  bit  beyond tolerable. I was using a 4 pound fish style trolling weight and running at 50 feet. The stainless steel  cable setup a harmonic  resonance that was actually magnified by the kayaks hull. Needless to say I didn't  catch any fish until I stopped using the downrigger and switched to a trolling weight tied to my main fishing  line. I have read some opinions  on  trolling Wire hum, and it varies from attracting fish, to scaring fish. All I know it was exceptionally loud. To fix this problem I started using a braided line. This helped  increased my safety also. In the event of a snagged weight I can cut my line with my knife that is always in reach. The hum was dramatically reduced and fishing improved. I use an 80 pound braid and the same 4 pound weight. Good fishing.

Get rid of the wire, use 65# Power Pro.

All good, 65 pound might be a better choice. It's thinner and cheaper.

I have #150 on one of mine and #65 on the other.  Main thing is you can cut it quickly if you have to in an emergency.

Lions lost by a FN lucky catch!!!!!!!!

Braid only way to go, less drag as well, I use 100lb or maybe 125lb braid on my DR, been on my DR for a while.

I use 80 lb power pro, too. Works great. It still hums a little at some depths/speeds, but I've caught fish while it was humming so not too worried.

On the Cannon Lake-Troll which I've mounted on my Revolution I use an eight pound downrigger weight on Scotty 175 pound Spectra low-drag braided downrigger line.  It doesn't hum.

How deep are you trolling?

For safety, don't use wire with a DR on a kayak. Use something that you can cut, and have a knife in position so that you can cut the line immediately, if need be.

This year, at ML, my DR line got caught on a whale that swam under my kayak (like 4' under). If I'd been using wire, it would've been like that scene from Jaws, where the barrels that are attached to the shark disappear under water. Only it would've been a whale with my kayak.

My little Scott lake trolley d/r did the same thing while installed on my 12 foot alum, boat.  It was super loud and annoying!
I've noticed it's as loud while on my OB but it's still present.  I have a plan to swap the steel cable out for some heavy duty braid just haven't done it yet.
