So my hooks keep getting rusted. I'm wasting money. I keep buying them and they rust really quick. They are all stored still in their baggie in my Plano ammo box.

I would think the gamagatsu hooks that are nickel plated would rust slower, but they are rusting faster than the cheaper walmart hooks.

Is there a particular color that rust slower?

What measures are you guys taking to prevent this?

Buy a quality box for your hooks. Throw a couple packets of Silica Gel in the box.

Forgot to mention, take the hooks out of the pack. I'll reuse hooks, and if you throw a wet hook back in the factory pack - rust. I make sure (most if the time) to snip the knot off the eye, that can rust too.

Invest in better hooks and some Plano 3600 waterproof boxes... They'll not only increase your hooksets but save you money and headache in the long run!!! I used to run nothing but gamakatsu nickel plated 1/0-5/0 hooks... They rust too and too quick for my liking, so I stuck to and use nothing but Owner Cutting point black hooks... They black coated hooks rust way slower the nickel plated or chrome hooks.. If you want to go cheap... Brads makes really cheap hooks that work, but you'll find yourself changing hooks out due to them dulling.

They are not only  sharp as hell but they take quite some beating to really rust. So..... Better hooks, waterproof boxes, dessacant pouch (from a shoe or whatever inside the box) and you are golden!

Buy a box of one hundred and discard when too rusty, or go to commercial salmon fishing supplies if sport stores don't have 100 per box hooks.  Stainless steel will not rust although they are more expensive.

I like the Gammi hooks price is right but just rust.  I might try owner hooks..  Picked up a couple water proof plano boxes yesterday from walmart.  I work with air dryers so ill grab a handful of desiccant.

I been through so many storage boxes to finally get the right size for the kayak.  Too big.. too small.. too wide..   :smt012

If they are rusting, your getting them wet somehow.  Take only what you need out there, give the hooks you do take a shot of WD40.

I had the same problem.  I now keep everything compartmentalized.  A few hooks readily available; the rest are locked away in a water tight container.  Of the ones that were used or got wet, I rinse 'em with fresh water and then give a shot of WD-40.  I bought some Salt-X to try, but haven't gotten around to it.

Wd40 is your friend.  I leave my Plano box open to dry out a couple days after fish trip.  Wipe gear and tackle down with rag used for wd40.  I use Gamakatsu and Brads tackle. They all rust about the same.

I salvaged about 10 out of a pack of 25 gammi hooks..    Rinsed them then dried and put in a new baggie with a couple drops of corrosion x.  Tossed many various size hooks out. Wiped the plano ammobox with a coat of corrosion x.

I do plan on compartmentalizing only what I need for the day.  So I bought a 8" and a 5"  Plano waterproof container.   I rinse all my fishing gear every time with a hose.

Looks like Flambeau boxes have integrated "stop rust" dividers that is supposed to aide in this issue.  Haven't tried them so no personal comments.  Endorced by KVD so they must be good ... right :smt044

+1 on this the plano ammo boxes are not waterproof and if sealed with even a few drops of water will speed up rust due to condensation. I usually open up my box to air out between trips.

Also, your hooks are rusting because you you dont use them. Hooks need love too. Get out there!

Well played Bob.. lol If that is the case I hope your crab pots don't rust.

Im gonna plan on thanksgiving morning or day after. Or thanksgiving weekend. Wife is not working so I'd be free from diaper changes.  Mind you I just moved and trying to sort things out.  I hope crab season would be open on or before T-day.

I left a worm on a hook for drop shotting one time after fishing the Oniel forebay. I saw a small spot of rust under the worm the next time I fished. I didn't think much of it. Was then using it to fish in 10' clear water and saw a 3 lb bass take it. I set the hook and the fish was gone. I reeled up and the hook had broken at the rust spot. Damn.
